You can put acrylic/acrylic-latex/latex over oil, but only with proper prep. You have to either de-gloss the oil (with, what else, a de-glosser, basically a chemical cocktail, or by sanding), or you have to use, as you did, a bonding primer such as BIN or Kilz, or one available at various paint stores.
This is oil based primer, and like all oil based primers it will stink (real original one is almost unbearable)... Oil based primers are typically used to block heavy stains and odors. if you don't have those you can get a water based nearly odorless primer (like Kilz 2) and it will work just fine.

How Do I Paint Over Painted Walls? If the wall is in good condition and the paints are chemically the same (both latex, for instance), you have a few options when the new paint is the opposite shade of the old paint. You can use a primer to thoroughly cover the old color, then apply 1 or 2 coats of the new paint.

The glossy surface of oil-based paints makes it so difficult for any other paint to bond. That's why, if you apply water-based paint straight to oil-based, it will flake and crack as the water-based paint pulls away. So, to get oil-based ready to paint over, you need to take away a lot of that gloss.
Depending on how strong or bold the previous color is, it may be necessary to apply more than one coat of primer. However, it is not necessary to over apply the primer with so many coats. As long as the primer applies uniformly over the previous color, then one or two coats should be sufficient.

You can use a latex primer over oil-based paint as long as it is a bonding primer. Bonding primers are best because they are formulated to adhere to glossy surfaces, such as oil-based painted finishes.
Do not thin. Stir thoroughly before and occasionally during use.

However, we do suggest scuff sanding the coating first to help promote adhesion, but you don't need to sand off the stain. I hope this info helps.

When To Use a Paint & Primer In One. If you want to paint a wall that already has paint on it, and there won't be an extreme change in color or texture, then you are free to use a paint-and-primer-in-one because it can be useful for these scenarios. Paint-and-primer-in-one works on pre-painted surfaces.
Do I have water-based or oil-based paint in my house? The test to determine whether your paint is oil-based or water-based is pretty easy. Simply put some methylated spirits on a rag and wipe at a small section of your wall. If the cloth is stained with the wall colour, it is water-based.
No you do not need to remove all old paint, if it will not scrape off or sand off with basic work a good Primer will make a good bond.. ridges could show .. But it depends on the item. If it is fine furniture, use of paint stripper is not just sand down.
