While Caraway cookware is praised for its non-toxic, non-stick surface and attractive design, some users mention that the cookware can develop hot spots and uneven heating over time.
What Is Caraway Cookware Made Of? Caraway Cookware's pots and pans have an aluminum core that is coated with a ceramic nonstick coating, a mineral-based coating that is gaining popularity as an alternative to traditional PTFE coatings. The handles are made from stainless steel.
Choosing between ceramic and nonstick cookware can be hard. One key fact is that ceramic pans don't have PTFE, making them a safer choice health-wise.
Here's why we favor Caraway over GreenPan for toxic-free, sustainable pots, and pans, but why Greenspan may be more durable long term. Caraway Home and GreenPan both make non-stick cookware without the standard Teflon (PFAS) coating. Both brands are billed as safer, more sustainable options for the home cook.
Then, we removed GreenPan entirely from our list of non-toxic cookware. There were two primary reasons: Competing brands began providing independent laboratory testing to prove their products are non-toxic. We became aware of lawsuits against GreenPan that cast doubt on the company's marketing claims.
However, our cookware values health and intentional living above all else. That's why all of our cookware is 100% non-toxic and free of PFOA, PTFE, other PFAs, cadmium, or toxic metals.
If you've decided to swear off PTFE-coated nonstick cookware, there are some good alternatives, including a number of ceramic, cast-iron, carbon steel, and stainless steel pans that perform well in our tests.
Is HexClad cookware safe? HexClad describes its nonstick coating as a "Japanese coating infused with diamond dust." The company states that its pans are PFOA-free, though they do contain PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), commonly known by the brand name Teflon.

I use the large baking sheet and loaf pan most often, and both are still in great condition. Although my loaf pan did get one bad knife scratch; you want to be really careful with the knives and utensils you use on nonstick coating. If eggs are sticking, it's typically due to insufficient preheating or not enough fat. Ensure your pan is evenly heated to the right temperature before adding a generous amount of oil or butter.

Essentially, the only difference lies in the name. PTFE is the shortened name of the chemical polytetrafluoroethylene, and Teflon is the trade name of the same polymer. If you are looking for a highly flexible, non-stick material that is chemical, electrical and thermal resistant, look no further than PTFE.

Look for Specific Brand Logos or Marks. Teflon Logo: Some cookware brands include the Teflon logo on the bottom of the pan or on the packaging. This logo can help you identify the presence of Teflon.
The Bottom Line
Caraway is pricier than GreenPan, but their products have consistently been top performers in our tests and have continued to deliver top-quality performance after years of use. Alternately, GreenPan is more affordable but did become less nonstick over time.
They are not dish-washer friendly and need to be hand-washed gently as being reckless with them may rip off the Teflon coating. Other reasons why professionals dislike using non-stick frying pan sets include the fact that they are not oven-friendly and can't be used with metal utensils.
In general, you want to replace nonstick pans after five years. But you need to be particularly careful with nonstick cookware produced before 2015, as it may contain PFOA. If your cookware dates back to 2015 and earlier, it's likely time to replace it even if it doesn't contain PFOAs.
