Removing Rust For heavy rust, we'd suggest using BKF Powdered Cleanser.
Bar Keepers Friend is a bleach-free, oxalic-acid based powdered cleaning product, ideal for stainless steel items (though it can be used on lots of other things too -- it's great for cleaning enameled cast iron!). It can easily remove rust, tarnish, mineral deposits, and tough stains from most surfaces.
Vinegar: White vinegar contains acetic acid, which can help dissolve rust. Application: Soak a cloth in vinegar and apply it to the rusted area. For stubborn stains, BKF recommends letting the cleanser sit and penetrate for up to one minute, but not longer than that, as prolonged exposure can cause discoloration and scratches.
Most people know WD-40 Multi-Use Product as a lubricant, but it was originally used as an anti-corrosive by the aerospace industry to prevent spacecraft from rusting. WD-40 can help remove rust from metals like iron, chrome, and stainless steel without further damaging the surface of the metal or removing the paint.
Vinegar. If your tools are significantly rusty, and you are able to submerge them without affecting any of the other surfaces, a vinegar bath can be a good way to remove the rust. Submerge your rusty implement in white vinegar and leave overnight.

Choose the spray setting for spot-cleaning, or set the sprayer to the foam setting to cover a larger area (the foam also adheres to the surface longer). No need to wet the surface first just spray the cleaner on the rusty area, and allow it to sit for one minute before scrubbing with a non-abrasive sponge and rinsing.
Bar Keepers Friend Doesn't Use Bleach
Bleach fumes will sometimes cause me to wheeze, if not start a full-fledged asthma attack. While Comet, Ajax, and other household cleaners are bleach-based and alkaline, Bar Keepers Friend isn't.
BKF is not harmful to the skin during casual use. However, gloves are recommended for prolonged use or sensitive skin. The oxalic acid in BKF is mild, but it may irritate sensitive skin and will sting in any open wound (similar to lemon juice on a cut).

Bar Keepers Friend is recommended for surfaces including stainless steel, copper, brass, ceramic tile and glass. The company does not recommend using it on gold, silver, pewter, anodized aluminum, mirrored surfaces, wood or cast iron.
