The Home Depot takes back rechargeable batteries, CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs) and plastic bags. You can find a recycling bin with directions for dropping off these materials near the entrance of your local Home Depot store.
Lowe's has a recycling center near the entrance of some of their locations, where customers can drop off LED bulbs along with other items like batteries and compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs).

Energy efficient light bulbs can be recycled at most larger Recycling Centres and some stores - find your nearest below. Older style 'incandescent' bulbs aren't recyclable and should be put in the waste bin.

Make sure that the fixture is in good working order, with no rust or frayed wires, and remove all light bulbs before taking the fixture to be donated. You can only dispose of incandescent and halogen bulbs with your household waste. This is because they do not contain any harmful chemicals or components that require special processing. You need to recycle other bulbs, like fluorescent lamps and some LEDs properly.
To know if a lamp contains mercury; look for the symbol “Hg” on the bulb or the fixture, or for the statement “Contains mercury” on the packaging or its manual.
