One of our favorite window cleaning hacks is to create your own window cleaning solution using simple distilled vinegar, otherwise known as white vinegar. This is an easy-to-find product (if you don't already have it around the house).
Wash Your Windows
You can use diluted apple cider vinegar to wipe down your windows—first, dust with a dry cloth. Then spray your all-purpose cleaner on the window and wipe with a paper towel. To prevent streaks, you will want to quickly dry your windows with a dry paper towel or microfiber cloth.
Is apple cider vinegar or white vinegar better for cleaning? Both ACV and white vinegar are effective natural cleaners. ACV doesn't smell as harsh as white vinegar, but since white vinegar is slightly more acidic than ACV, it's a stronger cleaning agent.
Can You Use Substitute Apple Cider Vinegar for White Vinegar? Apple cider vinegar and white vinegar make good substitutes for one another in most cooking applications, but the former is significantly more tart. In many cases, you can also use these vinegars as substitutes for other types of vinegar.
Though your standard white vinegar is considered neutral in flavor, it is highly acidic and has a pronounced sharp bite. Use it as an equal swap for apple cider vinegar, but consider adding a splash of fruit juice or a pinch of sugar to balance out the flavor. On its own, distilled white vinegar can be a bit harsh.
This match made in heaven has been a household staple for a long time and I make sure to keep it handy. To make the solution is simple and easy on the wallet! Pour equal parts of vinegar and Dawn into a spray bottle. Gently shake, then spray liberally onto the surface to be cleaned.
Rinsing is not necessary! If you're simply using a vinegar and water solution to wipe and disinfect, you won't need to rinse. However, if there's also plenty of dirt and grime you're wiping away, you may also want to rinse with some extra water.
Use a cleaning solution: Like Glass-Rite cleaner! Or we also recommend a simple solution of equal parts vinegar and water, a Windex solution in water is good also. Do not use glass cleaners that are ammonia or alcohol based. They may leave streaks or make a film that attracts moisture or dust.
If you're all about the DIY life, we've got just the thing for you. Combine two parts water with one part white vinegar in a spray bottle and you'll be all set with a homemade window cleaner. You can also combine warm water with a few drops of dishwashing soap if you prefer.
In a spray bottle, combine ¼ cup of white vinegar with ½ teaspoon of liquid dish soap. Dilute the solution with 2 cups of water, then shake the bottle vigorously to mix the components. If you don't have white vinegar on hand, you can substitute it with lemon juice.
Mix up your window-cleaning solution: In a plastic spray bottle, mix together 2 cups of warm water with 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of Dawn. Sweep away dirt: Using a broom, sweep away the cobwebs and debris from the windows and sills.
Spray a stronger mix of 1:1 water and vinegar (or Windex, or glass cleaner) at your window, so that the solution covers most of the glass. (I found Windex to work better, but if you have pets—or kids—who frequently lick outdoor windows, vinegar may be the best route for you.)
Whether you are out of name brand glass cleaner or you want to use a more natural cleaner, vinegar works wonders on windows. Try a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water for a streak-free clean. You can use a spray bottle or dip a rag in the solution, just like you would an ordinary cleaner.
The set time for vinegar can be up to 30 minutes. For example, to clean the insides of food-stained pots and pans, soak them in a mixture of one-half cup of white vinegar diluted with one gallon of water for 30 minutes. Then rinse in hot, soapy water.
People with permanent hair color or treatments: Apple cider vinegar may make colored hair (or color-treated hair) feel more dry or brittle. If you do an apple cider vinegar rinse, you should follow it with deep conditioning to replace your hair's natural oils.
Adding vinegar and baking soda together creates a fizzy chemical reaction that can help dissolve stains and loosen up gunky messes. This makes them a handy cleaning combo, even though the actual solution left behind is basically salt water!
If you plan to use it on surfaces that aren't easy to rinse, or for any of the tips I've listed below, I suggest adjusting the ratio so that it's closer to 1 part Dawn to 6 parts vinegar, rather than using equal amounts.
Fill a spray bottle with two parts vinegar, one part dish soap, and two parts water. Spray the soap scum on surfaces and allow the mixture to work for five minutes. Scrub the surfaces with a soft, nylon-bristled brush and wipe clean with a microfiber cloth.
The acidic properties of white vinegar encourage the cuticles to lie flat, creating a protective seal. This helps make your hair smoother, easier to detangle, less frizzy, and adds shine while reducing the risk of breakage. Incorporating white vinegar into your regimen can prove beneficial for your scalp's health.
Finish off by applying apple cider vinegar to your toilet bowl, faucets and the basins of your sinks for that extra bit of shine, leaving your bathroom fresh and germ free. You can even create a scrubbing solution with baking soda added in to help lift even more stains!
