Remember to vacuum your pool whenever you start to notice debris such as dirt and leaves accumulating at the bottom of the pool. It's also a good idea to vacuum your pool every time you backwash the filter.
As a general rule, you should be backwashing your pool about once a week or in conjugation with your scheduled maintenance. Another industry standard is to backwash when your filter's pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI (pounds per square inch) over the starting level or “clean” pressure.
Drain/Waste: Opting the drain or waste setting will remove pool water without forcing it through the filter. Backwash: This clears out any debris, dirt and other contaminants that may have accumulated on the filter.
After the hose fills with water, backwash your sand filter for 2 – 3 minutes or until water runs clear. Shut off pump motor and push T-handle back down into locked position. Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
Turn the lever to RINSE, start the pump and rinse for about 15-30 seconds. Stop the pump and turn the lever to FILTER. This is the normal operating position. Close the drain outlet valve and start the pump.
For routine vacuuming, the filter valve is left in the normal “Filter” position. This directs dirty vacuum water through the pool filter to remove the contaminants, then conveys filtered water through return lines back to the pool. The "Filter" setting is used for light to moderate levels of pool sediment.
Reasons why dirt might return to your pool through the jets during vacuuming or after backwashing include not rinsing after backwashing, a damaged spider gasket, damaged filter or the pool pump being too large for the filter.
Now, here answers the question earlier: do you leave skimmer basket in when vacuuming pool? YES, you need to remove the skimmer or strainer basket before attaching the open end of the hose to the inlet. Finally, plug the open vacuum hose into the suction port.
You need to leave the skimmer basket in under the skim vac plate, this allows the skimmer basket to catch your debris, and you can empty it quickly without having to turn your pump off and on like you would without it. 3. Vacuuming your pool.
In order to prevent residual blow back into the pool, once you've finished backwashing it's highly advisable to rinse the filter. Just as the backwash lifts and flushes the sand, the rinse resets the sand to its original position for optimum filtration.
As a rule of thumb, regardless of if you have a sand filter or DE filter, you should backwash your pool about once a week during swimming season. The optimal time is right after you vacuum the pool. If your pool has had a lot more use than normal, it may be necessary to backwash twice a week.
It is not recommended to drain a swimming pool through the backwash valve. While sucking from the main drain and putting the water down the backwash line will work in some scenarios it puts your pool pump at risk of losing prime and running dry.
The Filter Method
Can you vacuum algae out of a pool using this method? Yes. Merely follow the normal vacuuming process. Check to see if dead algae or any dirt is flowing back into the pool.
When you vacuum to waste you are sending the water through your sewer line which will drain the pool slightly, but it expedites the algae removal process.
Waste. This setting draws water from the pool and sends it straight to the waste outlet without passing through the filter. You would use the 'Waste' setting to drain or partially drain your pool or you may use it when vacuuming if there is a lot of dirt and debris on the bottom of your pool.
In general, it's a good idea to vacuum your pool once a week. You should also vacuum your swimming pool any time you notice large amounts of debris, dirt, or leaves on the floor of the pool (for example, your pool may need vacuuming after a heavy storm).
Can You Backwash Too Much? If you backwash your pool too much i.e. time duration and/or close frequency then yes you can cause a lot of problems. Some problems that can arise from backwashing your sand pool filter too much are: Loss of water – 500+ litres of water can be lost in each backwashing cycle.
