“Because drywall is too weak to hang things from, a drywall anchor is necessary,” explains Matt Michaels, a spokesman for Lowe's Home Improvement in Charlotte, NC. The anchor essentially allows you to insert screws into the wall without causing the soft drywall to crumble around it.
The threads of a screw into only drywall, without an anchor, will NOT permanently hold in the drywall. It will just pull right back out sooner or later. Even though it may screw into the drywall and “feel” tight, when you hang a picture on it, it will pull out almost immediately. Especially if the picture is heavy.
How much weight can drywall hold without anchors? This can be 5 to 10 pounds, but keep in mind that the drywall is an extremely brittle material and, it is not strong enough to hold the weight for a longer period of time.
When you install something on a wall, you need it to fasten to the wall securely and stay in place. Installing fasteners in studs is the best option, but if a stud isn't available, the right anchor can also provide support. Learn how to use different types of drywall anchors.
Whether they be floating shelves or shelves with brackets—always, always use drywall anchors to mount them (if you're not screwing them into studs, that is).
With a rubber mallet or hammer, lightly tap the anchor into the wall until you get to the threads. Use a screwdriver to screw the anchor into the wall until the head of the anchor is flush with the drywall. Again, if you opt to use a drill go slow and be careful.
If you put even moderate outward force on one, however, it can easily pull right out of the wall. The easy repair is to replace it with a larger conical anchor, but that anchor will probably also pull out in time. A more effective solution is to replace it with a plastic screw-in anchor, a molly bolt or a toggle bolt.
Even though a drywall can support a TV up to 100 lbs, the device is still brittle and the mount can require additional support, or else the TV will land on the floor. Wall studs make up the frame for the TV that supports your walls. They provide a sturdy anchor point, ensuring that both the mount and TV stay in place.
Typically when you want to hang a heavy item on the wall where there is no stud, you have to get out your drill, drill a hole, hammer in a wall anchor, and then screw in a large screw.
An electric drill is used to drill a hole into drywall. Drilling into drywall may be necessary when installing wall anchors to hang pictures, mirrors or light fixtures. You may also need to drill a hole into drywall to create a pilot hole from which you can cut out an area of the wall to install an electrical box.
If you're a DIYer novice, you need to know you can't screw directly into brick. You need to drill a hole, insert a rawl plug – a type of fixing which will hold your screw in place – and then screw into this. This process is much easier in a brick wall than plasterboard, which may require more specialist fixings.
The initial fixing can be screwed directly into plasterboard using only a screw driver and the application of sufficient pressure. Once the fixing is into the plasterboard it can be used to fit all manner of brackets and other lightweight applications to the wall.
When drilling into plaster, it is highly recommended to use a wall anchor. Wall anchors ensure that your screws for plaster wall hold properly and don't break the plaster around them.
The best option you have is to screw the shelving into the wood studs behind the drywall. You do not need plastic or metal wall anchors for this.
What is this? Simply drill or nail into the wall at the location you found with a stud finder. If it goes in and gets stuck, you've hit the stud. If it suddenly slides into the wall and is easy to pull out, you've gone through the drywall and hit air!
Toggle bolt
Toggle bolts have sturdy metal anchors. Like molly bolts, toggle drywall anchors are metal, and they include a sturdy anchor that will spread out on the opposite side of the wall (remember, most drywall is less than an inch thick). These are considered the strongest option.
Both metal and plastic toggles can be used on ceilings at 1/3 the holding power listed for walls, up to a maximum of 15 pounds. Drywall may pull away from ceiling joists at heavier weights.
Self-threading anchors do not require pre-drilling holes because they are self-thread- SIMPLE! Using a nail to make an indentation on the mark is not required, but it is acceptable if desired.
