Shake and stir the mixture occasionally to keep it from forming a mound of thick, undissolved shellac at the bottom of the jar. Also, you can warm it gently, such as with the indirect heat from a desk lamp, to speed the dissolving process.
You just apply shellac with the pad, working quickly and never going back over an area to fix a missed spot or overlap. You want to apply thin and fairly even coats, but don't obsess over it. Just fully damp, not flowing coats. You can build a finish a little faster with a brush.
Do not shake the shellac but rather stir it or roll the container in your hands prior or use a stir stick.
Shellac can be sprayed, painted with a brush or applied with what's called a pad or, in the UK a rubber (not one and the same thing with USA). The pad is usually a cotton cloth 15'' square and filled to a small handful with cotton wool.
You do not need to sand between shellac coats, but it can seriously improve the piece's finish. That is because small imperfections like specks of dust get bigger and bigger every time you add a new coat. Shellac will bond with the coat under it, making one layer. Not sanding can leave you with a lumpy finish.
Before the liquid shellac is used, it should be shaken or stirred thoroughly and allowed to stand for a few hours. After dissolving, the different shellac colours may be intermixed in the liquid state to obtain intermediate tones or shades of shellac.
You don't want the shellac to drip and run, but if you find a drip make sure to brush it into the project as soon as possible. Paul usually applies 3-4 coats of shellac. Leave the project for a minimum of an hour once coated before you apply the next coat.
Shellac doesn't "cure". It's an evaporative finish...it's "done" as soon as the alcohol flashes off. So you can coat in anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Shellac should never be applied thickly or built up thickly, either.
Brush It On
Using long, light strokes, brush the shellac along the grain. Keep it thin and even. Thick coats may seem faster, but trust me—they're trouble waiting to happen.
Otherwise the alcohol could affect the shellac you put on your project. I like to apply 3-4 coats.
Do not press too hard on the brush. Too much pressure will cause the paint to swell out the sides of the brush and streaks will appear.
The term 'lifting' refers to when gel polish does not bond to the nail plate correctly. This could be to do with application or preparation. A lack of adhesion means the gel does not flex with the nail, causing the gel to separate or 'lift'. This can cause the gel to chip, peel, and generally come away from the nail.
Q: How long does it take to cure CND Shellac Top Coat? A: CND SHELLAC Top Coats should be cured for one minute in the CND LED Lamp (preset button 3) and two minutes in the CND UV Lamp.
Quick-drying finishes such as shellac or lacquer require extremely fine-haired natural animal hair brushes that will give you a long stroke without brush marks. If the brush is well-made and the hair is dense enough, you'll also get a very long stroke with very evenly controlled release of the finish.
As already mentioned above, the Acetone Soluble Polymers (tiny tunnels) mean that pigments in Shellac can be easily attacked by chemical exposure during daily activity such as bathing, house cleaning, laundry, gardening, car washing, swimming, etc. Sun light exposure can also make colours fade faster.
When you have restored the old shellac to a smooth consistency, apply a clear shellac topcoat. The finish will look authentic but completely rejuvenated.
To make the dissolving go faster, you can reduce the flakes to powder (for example, in a blender) or place the container in hot water. With both methods you still need to stir, however, until the shellac has dissolved.
You can apply premixed or homemade shellac by brushing it on or padding it on to wood. Brushing is the more common method of applying shellac. Brushing on shellac requires a fine, natural or china-bristle brush. Use a two or three-pound cut of shellac and apply generously with long, smooth strokes.

DRY & RECOAT TIMES
Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F and 50% relative humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Dries to the touch in 30 minutes and can be recoated in less than 1 hour.
