Short answer: yes! Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt uses Z-Wave for connectivity, meaning it requires a compatible hub to connect to your Wi-Fi-based smartphone and other smart devices—for remote control.
To access your lock remotely from your phone or with voice commands, you'll need to sync it with a compatible smart home hub. The most common hubs for the Schlage Connect lock are Samsung SmartThings, Ring Alarm, Nexia and Wink.
The WiFi adapter is a simple wall plug-in that connects to your home WiFi signal, making it easy for you to set up. Then use the Schlage Home app to pair it with your deadbolt for access anywhere. *If you already have an iPad®/Apple TV® at home and connected to WiFi, the Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter is not necessary.

Schlage Connect does not work with the Schlage app, but other third-party apps, such as SmartThings, Wink, Nexia, and Ring Alarm. With either of the compatible apps, you can control your Schlage Connect Deadbolt from miles away as long as the lock is added/connected to the app.
All smart locks do not require a hub but those that connect via Z-Wave and Zigbee. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth smart locks can connect directly without using a hub. Both means (connecting via a hub and without a hub) offers you an excellent way of controlling your locks remotely, though with limitations.
