Full overlay cabinets, also known as European-style cabinets, have a clean, streamlined look. The cabinet door covers the entire face frame, leaving little room between the doors. This works for modern and transitional styles of cabinetry.
The way the doors and drawers are attached to the face frame create different looks. In partial overlay, the face frame can be seen between the doors and drawers. In full overlay, the doors and drawer fronts cover the frame completely. You only see it when you open the doors and drawers.
Most existing "face frame" cabinets will have large reveals (gaps between the doors and drawer fronts). These reveals may as large as 1" to 2" in some cases. A full overlay door will overlay as much of the cabinet face frame as possible to ensure a nice updated style for your new cabinets.
One of the main differences when comparing frameless cabinets vs full overlay is the visibility of the face frame. Frameless cabinets are completely devoid of a face frame, while full overlay cabinets cover most of the face frame.
Frameless cabinets can be harder to install compared to framed cabinets because of their design and construction. Unlike framed cabinets, which have a face frame that provides structural support and helps with alignment during installation, frameless cabinets lack this additional support.
In fact, frameless cabinets are also known as “full-access” cabinets because they are most space efficient when it comes to maximizing your storage capacity.
There are three variations of framed cabinetry: partial overlay, full overlay and inset. Inset styles reveal the entire face frame. Full overlay styles cover nearly the entire frame, while partial overlay styles reveal the frame with large gaps between doors and drawer fronts.
If you're short on budget but want better quality, go with standard overlay; otherwise, if long-lasting durability matters most to you, consider buying full overlays.
Lack of Sturdiness - The biggest downside to frameless cabinets is that they aren't as structurally stable as framed cabinets. Without the added frame for durability, the cabinets are a bit more vulnerable to structural damage.
Shaker-style cabinet doors are commonly full overlay, so the cabinet's face frame is fully covered by the doors and drawers. This creates a clean look that has become synonymous with modern kitchens.
Frame Width
The width of the frame will determine how much overlay you can add to a cabinet opening and how much frame you can cover. A typical full overlay is 1/8” to ¼” less than the frame width. Measuring your face frame width will determine the overlay of door you can measure.
A face frame does a better job of this if it overlaps the box edges a bit. Making the face frame run past all the plywood edges provides a little wiggle room and hides not-so-perfect saw cuts on the plywood. Face frames on sides of kitchen cabinets should overlap 1/4 in.
A "true" full-overlay door style leaves roughly a 1/8" clearance on the left and right edge with 1/4" reveal top and bottom. Often when referring to full-overlay many manufacturers have a 1/4" reveal on the left and right which is most common.
Potential Outdated Appearance: for most clients who come in with the thought that partial overlay cabinets are outdated, we recommend these clients look at the cabinet face and make adjustments. A lot of times what they are truly saying is outdated is the cabinet face and not the overlay.
The weight of items stored inside can actually warp the cabinet. Frameless cabinets are usually more costly than framed because of specialized equipment required for construction.
Overlays can come in a variety of sizes but in common applications we most often see a 1/2" overlay or 1/4" overlay. Although, where European Hinges are used there is a broader range of overlay sizes. When measuring your overlay, you will need to look on the hinged side of the door, to determine your overlay size.
Can I use framed and frameless cabinets together in one kitchen? Yes, mixing framed and frameless cabinets can create a unique, customized look in your kitchen, especially when blending traditional and modern styles. Just ensure the designs and finishes complement each other.
While factors such as the quality of the materials will have the biggest effect on the price, in general, full overlay cabinets can cost up to 16% more than partial overlay cabinets.

Although this style tends to be one of the most expensive on the market, it's a classic look that'll last for generations. The inset door gets its name because it is set inside of the cabinet frame – typical cabinet doors rest on the outside of the frame.
