However, like teenagers who are seemingly repelled by clean spaces, bears are not fond of tidy campsites or the smell of cleaning products. Among the more effective bear-deterring scents are disinfectant cleaners -– especially pine-based and ammonia-based products — and bleach.
Undiluted pine-sol can be used as a deterrent for keeping bears out of trash/away from gardens/food sources. It overwhelms their senses and they avoid it if you pour it over stuff you want them to stay away from.
Some people spread cayenne pepper in and around their camps, believing that the irritants in the pepper will annoy bears that sniff it. Some people place cups of household ammonia around their site. Apparently the odor irritates a bear sufficiently to keep it out of your site. This technique seems to work well.
Effectiveness: Pine Sol contains pine oil, which is known for its strong scent. This scent can act as a deterrent for certain pests, such as ants, spiders, and cockroaches. However, it may not be as effective against all types of critters.
A: No. Peppermint oil actually will attract bears. They don't like heavy pine sects, like Pine Sol. Thank you for your feedback!
► BEAR SPRAY IS A DETERRENT made of red pepper oil (oleoresin of capsaicin). It inflames the eyes and upper respiratory system. If used properly, it can effectively deter an aggressive bear. ► TREAT BEAR SPRAY LIKE A FIREARM.
The 2 most effective bear deterrents are bear spray and noisemakers. Carry both when in bear country.
We do not recommend using Pine-Sol® on dishes. It is not approved by the EPA to be used on food-contact surfaces. Is Pine-Sol® safe to use on painted surfaces? We recommend testing a small inconspicuous area before using a Pine-Sol® cleaner on any painted surface.
Lysol and Pine-Sol are among the worst products for pets, as they are phenol-based. These phenol-based disinfectants are toxic to dogs and cats, and can even be deadly to cats as they are especially sensitive and small amounts can be absorbed through the skin.
Pine Sol is effective at repelling spiders and cockroaches.
Non-contact methods rely primarily on making loud noises (such as yelling, using an air horn or whistle), or motion-activated devices like visual and audio alarms or water sprinklers, which can deter bears without anyone being present.
Smells that Entice Bears
That includes whatever you decided to bring to enjoy by a crackling campfire. In his most natural state, a bear is likely to enjoy a wild diet. Anything that smells good to you is likely to smell even better to a bear.
Ammonia or cider vinegar- soaked cloth in trash can or hung on doors and windows can deter bears. The smell of Lysol and PineSol also repels bears.
Keeping Bears Out!
Close and lock all bear-accessible windows and doors when you leave the house, and at night before you go to bed. Replace exterior lever-style door handles with good quality round door knobs that bears can't pull or push open.
Bears have an incredible sense of smell and may mistake these for a scrumptious treat. Install motion-sensor lights around your property to deter bears from venturing too close. Similarly, loud noises like wind chimes or even a radio can help keep them at bay.
So fresh! Love love love the original Pine Sol, but this one is my favorite or the scented line! It has a very fresh and clean scent and doesn't leave my floors sticky after mopping them. The scent lasts for hours after using it and will fill your house after using it.
Never let Pine-Sol sit on the floor in your home. Immediately wipe up any spills or excess liquid. After cleaning with diluted Pine-Sol, make sure you rinse thoroughly. Using a damp mop with plain water after cleaning can help ensure no residue is left behind.
The strong scent is unpleasant for them, and they tend to steer clear of areas treated with Pine Sol. While it is not guaranteed that all mice will avoid Pine Sol, it effectively deter most mice from the treated areas.
Keep Pests Away
Do you have a raccoon problem? Try mixing a 50-50 solution of full strength Pine Sol and warm water, and spraying your garbage cans with it. The pine smell is repulsive to most animals.
When used in the wash Pine-Sol helps deodorize, and soften clothing, towels, etc. It is also ideal for grease stains. You can rub it on the stain, and add it to the wash in general.
A: We do not recommend mixing any Pine-Sol® product with other cleaning products or chemicals.
Bear spray is a very effective deterrent when used properly. Check out our video on what bear spray is and how to use it.
The main predator that all species of bears have to worry about is humans. In many parts of the world, bears are hunted for certain organs, such as their gall bladder, for use in traditional medicines.
Bears have an insatiable appetite and an amazing sense of smell, and they consider anything with a scent to be "food." This can include canned goods, bottles, drinks, soaps, cosmetics, toiletries, trash, ice chests, sunscreen, bug repellant, fuel, items used for preparing or eating meals, etc.
