Cleaners such as Pledge and Murphy's Oil Soap are not recommended because they leave a dull residue on the finish. Water based surfaces may be cleaned with a damp cloth or General Finishes Orange Oil. Do not use household cleaners or window cleaners.
You should absolutely NOT use Murphy's Oil Soap to clean your wood floors!
Wipe the area thoroughly, then dry it with a soft, dry cloth and assess the stain again. Alternatively, you can mix Murphy® Oil Soap with hot water to remove grime without hurting the wood, and then buff the area to restore its shine.
For heavy cleaning, dilute 1/2 cup Murphy per gallon. Clean well with wrung-out mop, and mop any excess water. No visible residue, no rinsing required.

Better Homes And Gardens recommends using Murphy® Oil Soap on outdoor furniture to freshen up plastic, metal, glass or wood items. You can also use it on other Furniture, such as your wood dining table and chairs, end tables, nightstands and bed frames.
When diluted properly, Murphy® Oil Soap Original Formula does not leave a residue. Despite the fact that it is called "oil soap," there is no "free oil" left behind. If you see a residue after applying Murphy® Oil Soap for the first time, it's likely that another cleaner was previously used.
I've been using Murphys Oil Soap for about 4 years now and LOVE IT! THE SMELL IS FABULOUS! It leaves a shine that is picturesque! and since using Murphys Soaps, I have used nothing else on my hardwood floors.
Mix a 50/50 solution of vinegar and warm water and pour it into a spray bottle. Mist on cabinets, let sit for a minute or two and then wipe clean with a soft cloth. Add a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent to the vinegar and water solution to clean extremely grimy cabinets.

Clear Finishes: Mix up equal parts of paint thinner and a mild soap, such as Murphy Oil Soap, and apply with a sponge or paintbrush. Wipe the solution away with a rag to clear the dirt; you'll likely remove a thin layer of varnish or shellac, too, because the grime has melded with it.

Murphy Oil Soap is a good brand of liquid oil soap that can be used for stain removal. If the stain is old or very difficult, try applying the liquid oil soap and allow the garment to set for up to thirty minutes before washing it according to the above directions.
Using a two sided bucket method (one side soap, one side rinse) or two buckets, mop with 1/2 cup vinegar with a drop of deter- gent or Murphy's Oil Soap mixed with warm water. The clean vinegar odor will go away shortly after the floor dries.
Solution 1: Clean dirty wooden furniture with just water, vinegar and olive oil. This cleaning solution is great to freshen up and gently clean varnished wooden furniture. Olive oil adds moisture and shine to wood, while vinegar cuts through sticky grease and acts as a mild disinfectant.
If it is safe to proceed, use a solution of mild detergent and lukewarm water. With a clean sponge or soft cloth wash, rinse and dry only a small area at a time. You will have to work to avoid over-wetting the finish. Avoid excess water, especially around joints.
If your varnish is looking a little dull, you can use a furniture polish, approved for use on varnished wood, together with a dry cloth, to bring back the shine.
First off, Murphy's Oil soap is oil. It leaves OIL on the finish (water evaporates....the soap and oil residue does NOT). This oil can and WILL penetrate THROUGH the poly and onto/into the wood. The worst that can happen: your floors will never take more finish again....

Ok, I came up with my own solution, so if anyone ever needs it: 2 cups white vinegar in a gallon of water, mop vigorously and let dry, repeat as needed. I had to do the whole place twice over and two areas a third time.
A gentle, water-based solution such as Murphy® Oil Soap Original works well when cleaning and protecting the finish on your wood floors, furniture and cabinets.
An oil-based finish will give your floors an amber hue. If you go this route, you'll need to wait about eight hours until the finish is dry, and expect a moderate scent.
