A large format tile is great for small spaces. The reason has to do with grout joints. The larger the tile, the fewer grout joints you'll have and the greater sense of spaciousness you'll feel. Take this notion to an extreme and you might have just one very large format tile in that small space.
1. Larger Tiles Make Small Rooms Appear Bigger. Because grout lines are thinner and fewer as part of the layout, smaller rooms appear bigger when using larger tiles. Large-format tiles make floors look more streamlined – therefore, creating the illusion of more space.
Tile designers feel the same way about small tile in small spaces. Using 2×2 or 4×4 (inch) in a five-foot-squared space may seem appropriate.
Diagonal Tiles Work Best
For instance, a diamond pattern creates the illusion of a bigger room than a checkerboard pattern. In a diamond orientation, the widest section of each tile faces the entrance. This prevents you from measuring the space in terms of tiles across or tiles down.

Choose the Tile Direction Well
Its direction is similar to a brick wall, where the longer side is across the surface. This creates a more pleasant layout and makes the room look wider. For a much smaller space, such as the bathroom, it's best to lay down the tiles the long way, where the longer side is set vertically.
The simplest way to choose the right size tile is to choose a tile relative to the size of your space. A large area like an open floor kitchen and dining room, or a large living room will be able to handle large tiles.
If you want to make your living room look bigger, stick to lighter colors that reflect more light and make the space feel more open. Neutrals, like off-white, beige, or light grays, are a great way to add a level of sophistication and calm.
Using small patterns or patterns on only one wall makes the room look smaller. Take a chance. Install wallpaper with a big pattern on all the walls, and the ceiling of the room will expand in size. Grasscloth is a wonderful, neutral way to make the walls disappear.
Laying tile is easy but laying tile and doing it well is difficult. From that angle, it may make more sense to hire a professional tiler than to do it yourself. If you're trying to save money, one way to approach it is to hire the pro for the most visible areas.
Direction of Tile
If a room is narrow, this further elongates the space, making it appear in longer and narrower than it is. This problem can be solved by installing the tiles on the diagonal. This draws the eye out to the corners of the room, which visually widens the space.
So, in short, you can tile over tile as long as you're working on a fairly sound surface. The surface of the existing tile should be free of mold and mildew, completely level (including grout), and without any warping or strangely-placed tiles that might otherwise interfere with a smooth new layer.
Contrary to what some might think or say, wide plank flooring does NOT make your space look smaller. It's interesting, even though the planks are wider, because of the visual tricks wide plank plays on your eyes, the room often appears even larger than it is…not the other way around!
