To seal chalk painted surfaces for outdoor use you need to apply an exterior topcoat finish that helps protect it from UV rays along with moisture. The best products to apply over chalk paint outdoors are exterior polyacrylics and exterior varnishes.
You can get a more durable, waterproof finish by applying a clear coat to unsealed chalk paint, but without the time, effort, and extra expense of wax.
Chalk paint is water-resistant. It needs a sealer of lacquer if the surface is exposed to water. It is not waterproof and should not be used on surfaces that are in constant contact with water.
