Despite oil-based paints' reputation for easy application and long-lasting finishes that can be scrubbed and cleaned regularly, latex paint is widely considered the best choice for most kitchen cabinets since it offers lower levels of VOCs and dries faster.
Or perhaps you've just bought a new house and aren't able to spend money on new built-in cabinets just yet. But redecorating your kitchen needn't cost an arm and a leg. You can use Chalk Paint® to repaint the doors on your kitchen cabinets and drawers quickly, easily – and with minimal spend.
Elevate the look of your interior surfaces with this paint that dries to a lush, iridescent finish and features our premium BEHR ULTRA SCUFF DEFENSE Formula for extra protection in your home's high-traffic areas but also great for adding colour to trim, doors, cabinets and indoor furniture.
BEHR PREMIUM® Cabinet & Trim Interior Enamel offers excellent flow & levelling and dries to a hard, durable finish. Its outstanding early block resistance allows for quick return to service, making it ideal for use on cabinets, trim, doors, baseboards and more.
-Use BEHR MARQUEE Paint to cover the cabinets. I used two coats, but I honestly couldn't believe how well it covered with just one coat! -Let dry overnight and then put the cabinets back together.
While oil-based paints make a case for themselves with their reputation for easy application and a long-lasting finish that can be scrubbed and cleaned regularly, latex paint is widely regarded as the best choice for most kitchen cabinets, since it offers lower levels of VOCs and is quicker to dry.
While there are many types of paint to choose from, the best paint for kitchen cabinets is typically semi-gloss, gloss or satin. Matte is not practical in kitchens and baths where you will need durable paint you can easily clean.
Detailed Patterns, Warped or Damaged Cabinets
If your cabinets have detailed patterns or they are warped, chipped, cracked or have other damage to them, then painting your kitchen cabinets is not the way to go – it most definitely won't solve your cabinet problem.
Choose a high-quality paint. Special cabinet paints are available that provide a smooth finish, but any high-quality paint should work. Make sure your paint is acrylic, not vinyl. Acrylic latex-based paint is durable and easy to clean up.
The two primary differences between oil-based paint and latex-based paint on kitchen cabinets are final texture and dry time. Oil-based is more traditional and popular with purists who like the “painterly” look of brush marks, while latex gives a more consistent finish.
Dry Time: @ 77°F & 50% RH To Touch:1 hour To Recoat: 2 hours Full Cure:1 week Dry times are temperature, humidity, and film thickness dependent.
Use on properly prepared interior walls and ceilings of new or previously painted drywall, plaster, masonry, wood, and metal.
While satin finishes tend to be fairly durable in high traffic areas, they're not as durable and versatile as semi-gloss against mildew and mold. Kitchen cabinets in high moisture environments can, therefore, do better with semi-gloss paints.
DecoArt Satin Enamel Cabinet Paint
In the past, if you wanted to paint cabinets or furniture, you had to strip, sand and generally kill yourself getting a good surface ready to paint on. Now, with DecoArt's Satin Enamel paints, you don't need to do any of that.
Apply Primer
Let dry completely then lightly sand all surfaces using 120 grit sand block. Apply Paint – 2 coats minimum Using both the angled brush for detailed areas, and roller for flat areas, apply BEHR PREMIUM® Interior Cabinet & Trim Enamel in your choice of color. Let dry completely.
Priming is recommended on all surfaces. On previously painted surfaces and on new wood, masonry and vinyl surfaces, or on surfaces with heavy stains, prime with a product such as BEHR® Kitchen, Bath & Trim Stain-Blocking Primer & Sealer No. 75 prior to topcoating with this product. Follow all label instructions.
Behr Marquee paint is a high quality, exterior latex enamel that contains both primer and paint in one can. It uses cross linked polymers to resist dirt and has UVA protection to prevent fading.
WHITE BASE: READY TO USE OR ADD TINTING COLORANTS. DEEP BASE: DO NOT USE WITHOUT THE ADDITION OF TINTING COLORANTS. Recommended for interior wood, drywall, masonry, vinyl and other properly prepared and primed surfaces. Ideal for kitchen and bathroom cabinets and doors, windows, trim & molding.
Behr PREMIUM®shouldn't be thinned as it is thin enough to spray without any thinning. You can spray at around 1700- 2000 PSI. Ideally, start with low pressure and gradually increase as you go, this will help keep overspray to a minimum.
If you paint your kitchen doors with eggshell or interior wood paint, they will work. You can paint your kitchen cupboards with chalk paints, but you will usually need to seal the top coat with wax or varnish to prevent it from wiping. It will take a few coats to change the color.
