USING BAKING SODA OR VINEGAR
Baking soda is alkaline, while vinegar is acidic. Baking soda and vinegar are both natural disinfectants that can be used to turn hard water to soft water. They eliminate the scaly coating that occurs in hard water as a result of mineral deposits.
Boiling water is certainly one of the most effective ways to soften it. The boiling will have the effect of draining the hard water minerals to the bottom, like calcium and magnesium.
Soften your kitchen water by boiling: Boiling will make the salts in water sink to the bottom of the boiler. You can then scoop out this water or pour the water in another pot leaving the deposits in the end. Install an ion-exchange filter to your kitchen faucet or use a water pitcher filter.
You only have a few choices: soften batches of your water by boiling or using water softening products, or simply find effective ways to remove existing scale. There are no long-term water softening solutions aside from water softener systems.
The most effective way to address hard water is with a water softener. Water is softened when calcium and magnesium—the hardness ions—are collected by tiny resin beads through a process called ion exchange. The resin beads are charged with sodium or potassium ions.

Naturally lower your aquarium hardness by soaking dechlorinated tap water in peat moss, Indian almond leaves or driftwood. A more precise method would be to dilute tap water with reverse osmosis (RO) or distilled water or to use remineralized RO water.
Add washing soda when you wash your clothes – Washing soda or sodium carbonate is soluble in water, and reacts with the hard water minerals calcium and magnesium to soften your water.
So, do shower filters soften water? Unfortunately, the answer is no: Shower head filters are generally designed to address chlorine problems, not minerals. If you're looking for hard-water solutions, you'll need a water softening system.

Even after water treatment, it can enter your water supply naturally or through aging infrastructure. Hard water can corrode your plumbing, and it may even cause health risks. Drinking hard water has been associated with digestive problems, kidney stones, and nervous system issues.
Remember that water conditioners are installed to stop build-up in plumbing, not soften your water. Their effectiveness ranges greatly, depending on which technology they are built upon.
Generally speaking, hard and soft water are both considered safe to drink.
The most common alternative to a water softening system is a water conditioner. While water softeners remove the mineral ions from hard water and replace them with sodium ions through a process known as ion exchange, water conditioners alter the structure of the mineral ions.
The only way to properly lower your calcium hardness level is to pump out (through back washing or draining) a small amount of existing pool water and then refilling. This lowers the level because you are taking calcium-rich water out of the pool and replacing it with tap water with very low calcium levels.
