During the fabrication process, porcelain endures ridiculously high temperatures – we're talking around 1,450 degrees Celsius (2,642 degrees Fahrenheit). So, it's no surprise that this material is extremely heat resistant.
However, porcelain countertops also have several drawbacks that should be considered: Requires professional installation: Gauged porcelain tile is extremely thin, which makes installation more complicated to avoid cracking. It is not a good choice for a DIY project.
Heat Resistance
Porcelain is fired between 2200-2600⁰ F so it is extremely heat resistant. You won't need to worry about damaging the surface if you put a hot pan directly on top of it. Additionally, you can turn it into a cooktop utilizing gas burners or induction heat (installed underneath the countertop).
Due to the unrivalled technical performance of porcelain, high temperatures and sudden thermal changes do not affect the surface, so hot pots and pans can be safely placed on its surface.
Because it is fabricated in high heat over 2000° F, porcelain can easily hold its own against hot kitchen or bathroom environments. Its surface is resistant to damage after exposure or contact with hot pans and pots and won't burn, smoke, or emit harmful substances.
Is porcelain tile heat resistant? Yes, porcelain tiles are extremely heat resistant, providing the perfect solution where high temperatures are of concern.
Besides being easy to keep clean, porcelain is also non-porous and stain resistant. That's music to a countertop owner's ears because it means no sealing is required. Quality porcelain used to make countertops is scratchproof, along with being heatproof and highly durable.
Pouring boiling water is quite risky as it might lead to a steam burn or scalding. Another thing to keep in mind is what type of material you are pouring in into. If you have a porcelain sink, it is likely to crack due to the heat. All in all, pouring boiling water down your drain will only cause issues down the road.
The nonporous surface of quartz makes this countertop a hygienic, stain-resistant, easy-to-clean product that will last for an exceptionally long time with minimal maintenance. Because quartz is more durable and easier to maintain than porcelain, it is a better choice for a countertop.
Porcelain countertops can easily chip, break, scratch, or crack by any blunt force, such as if you drop a tool in a sink basin, toilet, or bathtub. This is partly due to the hardness of the surface. Furthermore, when any natural stone countertop gets chipped, you can quickly repair or buff it out.
The lifespan of a porcelain countertop is at least 10 years and as much as a lifetime, depending on usage, care and maintenance. The bottom line: Porcelain countertops stand up to everyday life, and they look good doing it!
Once installed, however, porcelain is very hard and durable, so they are not considered fragile at this point. Cracking is rarely an issue after the countertops are installed.
Granite. One of the most heat-resistant options for kitchen countertops is granite. This natural stone is formed underground through a natural process incorporating high pressure and temperatures. Typically, the heat generated by cooking will not be high enough to cause damage.
The technology in its production makes this material the perfect choice to create countertops. countertop, it is also useful as it is able to withstand temperature variations, being able to receive hot pans on it, to have great impacts, and even being resistant to falling objects.
Granite and porcelain are both durable and can withstand the dramatic changes in the weather, however, only porcelain is UV resistant and will not fade under the harsh light of the sun, making it the best choice for outdoor installations.
Porcelain is less likely to crack under extreme heat, whereas ceramic can become damaged, cracked, or even change shape when exposed to extreme heat.
Porcelain tiles tend to be harder, more resilient and more stain-resistant than ceramic tiles. They are one of the easiest types of tile to maintain but their surface can eventually be eroded by the regular use of corrosive chemicals such as ammonia, bleach or acids that can also damage the grout and loosen the tiles.
More specifically, porcelain tiles are what is often referred to as “moisture proof.” As you might imagine, this means that they are impervious to moisture, which means that they aren't likely to get easily damaged simply by being in bathrooms or even wet rooms.
As long as porcelain tiles are in a good condition before laying and laid correctly then no chipping should occur over time.
While granite and quartz are both popular and beautiful options, porcelain is another stone that homeowners have started to incorporate more frequently in their bathrooms, kitchens, and bar areas. Since porcelain is so new and has costs built in, it can be a more expensive material upfront.
Since porcelain countertops are nonporous, there is no need to use harsh chemicals and strong detergents. Simply keep porcelain countertops clean with regular home cleaning products. Another alternative would be to use warm soapy water. Just remember to not use plant oil soaps because they can leave an oily film.
So, porcelain is able to manage well as ovenware. Typically, porcelain ovenware dishes are suitable for temperatures up to 500-572F (260-300C).
Ceramic, porcelain, and stone tile expands and contracts with thermal and moisture changes in the environment as do all building materials. The expansion or contraction will rarely be seen with the naked eye. However, it is still present.
These cracks usually form when the tiles are weakened due to the cut – either partial or multiple – and especially where they are cut to form the corners or edges. Technically – anything which interrupts the continuity of the material can make these places more fragile and very delicate points of the tile.
