Since sugar soap is a chemical cleaning product, you must wash it off of the walls before you can begin painting.
Wipe the surfaces down, then rinse the sugar soap off with warm water. Repeat this until you are sure all grime, dirt and dust has been removed. When the surface has thoroughly dried, you are ready to start painting.
However, painting experts always advise cleaning and disinfecting the walls before painting them. When you're done wiping the walls with sugar soap solution, get a bucket of clean water and a new cloth, and repeat the same process to remove the soap from the wall.
You should be able to start painting after 30 minutes, or maybe even sooner. Check the woodwork is completely dry before starting. If washing down painted or wallpapered walls leave for around an hour before you start painting. Again check that the walls are completely dry, if not leave until they are.
To use Sugar Soap, simply dilute it in warm water. Using a sponge, wash the required surface with the soapy liquid. Once the entire area has been washed go over it again with clean fresh warm water, in order to rinse off the sugar soap and remove the remaining dirt or grease.
Sugar soap does not leave behind the amount of residue that other cleaning products do, but unless it is wiped off, then you will be painting over a chemical cleaning product, which will cause problems with your paint.
With fine sandpaper, remove lumps, bumps and any paint flakes. Brush off excess dust and then wash down the walls with Poly Sugar Soap to remove grease and grime. Let the sugar soap dry completely before filling.
If you use use a soap colorant, I suggest using a light color. I've painted on colored soap before, and it does work well, but lighter soap will give you more contrast.
Don't be put off by the name; sugar soap is an excellent cleaner for removing insisting grimy and greasy build-up stains anywhere in your home. It does not leave a residue after cleaning.
For oily or stubborn stains, Bostik Ultra Sugar Soap may be used as a more concentrated solution or undiluted. In all cases always rinse residue with clean water. Allow surfaces to dry properly before painting.
Let the sugar soap sit for 30-60 seconds. Then, wipe it off with a clean cloth or sponge. Leave the sugar soap on longer for areas that appear dirtier.
Professional Painters Usually Don't Wash Walls
Washing cuts into painting time, which cuts into their income, so don't expect your hired painter to wash down your walls unless you agree to pay them more for the service. Better yet, hire a cleaner to do this work, or do the cleaning yourself before the painter arrives.
Clean the surface using ordinary household detergent or mineral spirits. Remove loose paint or rust with a wire brush, sandpaper or steel wool. Sand glossy surfaces with fine grain sandpaper and wipe with a tack cloth.
Contrary to its name, sugar soap isn't a sweetened dishwasher. It's actually a gentle chemical compound that's crystallised to look like sugar. Its main use is on bare walls to help the coat of paint adhere better. However, it can also be used on painted walls to clean them up.
Never use dish soap to wash your car. According to Consumer Reports, dish soap isn't formulated for use on a car's paint.
All you need to do is mix ¼ cup of liquid sugar soap with 5 litres of warm water. Next, dip a sponge into the solution and clean the walls down from top to bottom. When you're done, leave them to dry for at least 2 hours before painting them, or ideally overnight if you can.

The comparable cleaning product in Canada and the US is trisodium phosphate, also known as "TSP".

Sugar soap is great for washing walls, but for a cheaper sugar soap alternative, dishwashing detergent and vinegar do the trick. Put some warm water in a bucket with a squirt or two of dish detergent and a splash of vinegar.
