Despite its durable properties, hairline cracks or small nicks can develop. You can repair minor blemishes yourself, but if the crack or damage is severe enough to compromise its structural stability, have a skilled professional make the repairs.
Since soapstone countertops do not crack easily, they are more durable than other countertops made of natural stone. Its non-porosity feature also means that your soapstone countertops can serve you for a long period without requiring sealing.
Porcelain sink repair with epoxy putty
Epoxy putty is the perfect solution for porcelain sink chip repair because of its gap filling properties, durable seal, and ability to sand and paint. Using Loctite Repair Putty All Purpose will leave you with a seamless repair job that will stand the test of time.
If they are soapstone they will be made up of slabs so the inside corners will be square. If they look like they are all one piece with rounded inside corners they are most likely concrete. Some concrete scratches fairly easily.
Standard soapstone sinks can range in price from a few hundred to over $1,000. The standard-size sinks at Vermont Soapstone run from $400 up to $1,000 for a 36-inch two-bowl sink. “Custom sizes will cost more,” says Bowman. “Our 36-inch two-bowl custom sink is in the $1,200 to $1,500 range.”
#6 Silicone or plumbers putty should be used to attach the strainer to the soapstone sinks. For other sinks consult the manufacturer.
Soapstone may chip if struck hard enough, creating a small area that you must replace. For this repair, you will need a small piece of similar soapstone and a clear, two-part epoxy available at any full-service hardware store or home center. Break the loose piece of soapstone into fine chips and mix with the epoxy.
Soapstone is functional, durable and beautiful. Even after 100 years of hard use, soapstone can be refinished to a looks-like-it-was-just-installed state.
Follow by a 220-grit sandpaper and water, then re-oil. (The sanding process removes the outer layer of oil.) Oiling and buffing on a regular basis can help this unique stone looking great. And while common household cleansers won't harm the stone, they will remove the mineral oil coating.
Repair damage to the stone with a stone repair kit, available from masonry product suppliers. Mix water and baking soda to create a thick paste for a stain removal poultice. Wet the stained areas with water and apply the paste thickly. Cover the areas in plastic wrap and leave for 24 hours.
Composite sink crack repair is a relatively simple endeavor. It can be done when the stone-based fixture gets its annual sealing or when the crack, chip or gouge is first noticed. With a few basic tools and materials, the granite composite sink can be restored to its pristine condition quickly.
Soapstone, being softer than granite and marble, is also more prone to scratches. The great advantage is that any scratches can be easily removed with a light sanding and/or mineral oil. Light scratches can be hidden by lightly applying some mineral oil.
Do you need to seal soapstone? We do not recommend sealing soapstone. Sealers are intended to seal porous stone like marble and granite which can stain. Soapstone is a very dense, nonporous stone which does not need to be sealed.
Its nonporous nature means that caring for soapstone is simple: little more than water and a gentle cleanser is needed for regular maintenance.

Pour mineral oil onto a clean cloth, and rub the cloth over the soapstone surface. Make sure the surface is covered with a thin layer of mineral oil, and let it seep into the surface. Repeat this process every eight weeks to prevent new stains from showing up.
Plumber's putty is a malleable, clay-like compound that creates a watertight seal by filling in the space under a flange to prevent water from seeping through. The product is ideal for setting faucets, sink basket strainers, shower and pop-up drains.
You can use silicone caulk or plumber's putty to seal sink drains. Plumber's putty may crack and cause leaks as the clay dries out with time. But it's the preferred choice of sealant if you'll be adjusting or removing the drain.
Do not use plumber's putty where you need adhesive strength (to bond materials or prevent them from moving) or where you need a watertight seal in exposed areas.
Soapstone slabs generally weigh about 20 pounds per square foot of material, although that will vary depending on the thickness of the stone.
Because it requires no sealing, soapstone is relatively low-maintenance. With minimum care, your new countertop can retain its good looks for many years. Enhance your counter's natural darkening progression by applying mineral oil to the surface every week or two and rubbing it in thoroughly.
Soapstone is both chemical resistant and heat resistant, so you can set hot pots and pans directly on soapstone without risk of cracking or scorching. Soapstone is much softer and more prone to scratching than granite or quartz however, so preparing food directly on your soapstone counters could easily scratch it.
