Baking soda can spot-treat the algae when combined with an algaecide. Widespread pool issues require hyper-chlorination or shock to sanitize the water thoroughly. Chlorine and algae killers both lower your pool's alkalinity, so you can add more baking soda to boost the levels afterward.
Incompatible Pool Chemicals
Mixing of organic chlorinating agents (such as trichloroisocyanuric acid) and inorganic chlorinating agents (such as sodium hypochlorite) can lead to fires, explosions and chlorine gas release.
While shocking and adding algaecide is effective in getting rid of algae, it should not be done together. This is because when you mix chlorine and algaecide together, it renders both of them useless. Hence, you should first shock the pool and wait for the chlorine levels to fall below 5 PPM.
i can add this to my pool while doing the SLAM. 80 TA is just fine. Don't add baking soda. But you can go ahead and add enough CYA to get to 30 and just assume it's there and use 12 FC as your new SLAM level.

Undissolved Granules

When closing and winterizing your pool, it is important to remember to balance your pool water's chemistry prior to closing and don't forget the algaecide. Algaecide is simple and effective with one quart of winter algaecide typically enough to treat 20,000 gallons of water all winter long.
Soda Ash or Baking Soda? If you want to raise your pH and alkalinity together, use soda ash (sodium carbonate). If your goal is to raise alkalinity only, use baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).
