Is root rot contagious? Unfortunately yes, root rot can be transferred from one plant to another. The fungal spores are airborne and can also be transported by insects as well as dirty gardening tools.
It is not possible to reverse root rot. The treatment of this disease involves removing the affected portions of the plant. Once the rotting or dying parts have been removed, they can then be repotted in fresh soil to give the remaining healthy roots a fresh start.
Root rot can quickly spread onto healthy tissue if unregulated, which is why catching it early is very important. N. B. - Although very rare, fungi diseases such as Phytophthora or Pythium could lay dormant in the potting mix until conditions permit growth (over-watering).
In order to fix and prevent root rot in plants, the roots must stay healthy. One should avoid overwatering, allow good drainage, replace the soil if needed, and select healthy plants.

More severe infections may take longer, but you should notice new growth and healthier leaves quite quickly. Do you water a plant after repotting for root rot? No. If your plant is suffering from root rot, you'll want to refrain from watering your plant for about 1 week after repotting.
Dealing with Root Rot
Prepare plants for replanting by cleaning the roots gently under running water and removing all brown, mushy roots with a sharp pair of scissors. Cut the healthy root just above the damaged area. Work quickly to replant within a few hours.
Root rot occurs when the roots don't receive enough oxygen, usually because of too much water. A parasite called Pythium makes its way in, and needs to be sterilized from the soil! Use peroxide or bleach to do this!
Apart from being more mindful of how often and how much water you give your plants and plant roots, you can also use a mixture of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide concentration mixed in 1 quart of water once a week to encourage healthy root growth in your plants' roots or treat the spread of root rot and root decay.
Hydrogen peroxide is effective at killing 97% of bacteria, viruses, mould spores, and fungi that are causing your plant to perish. Hydrogen peroxide kills root rot-causing fungi and restores the oxygen balance in the soil which helps your plant root system recover.
Plants may appear wilted and thirsty, but take care to refrain from watering until about a week after re-potting to ensure that any roots damaged during re-potting have healed. During the recovery period, place plants in a cooler, shadier spot. Most potting soil contains fertilizer.
You can treat the roots with a topical fungicide, such as organic Neem oil, or a water and hydrogen peroxide solution. Mix one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with one cup of water and spray the roots down well. Hydrogen peroxide can be used to kill off the organisms responsible for root rot.
The roots affected by root rot will look black and will feel mushy. Affected roots may literally fall off the plant when you touch them. Healthy roots may be black or pale, but they will feel firm and pliable.
The benzimidazole fungicides such as thiophanate-methyl are very active against the fungus and are used as soil treatments to control it.
Baking Soda Fungicide
Common household baking soda is a natural product used for combating plant fungus problems. Mix 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 2-1/2 tbsp. of vegetable oil in 1 gallon of tap water.
