“Vinegar won't leave any soap or fat residue on the drums or the drain,” he says. Set your washing machine to the highest and hottest water setting. Add in four cups of white vinegar, and start a cycle.
- Using Vinegar: Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser. Select the ``Tub Clean'' cycle on your washing machine (if available). If not, you can run a hot water cycle. Using a Washer Cleaner: If you prefer, you can use a commercial washing machine cleaner. Follow the instructions on the package.
Cleaning a washing machine can be done in a few simple steps. First, add one cup of white vinegar to the machine. Run the washer on the hottest cycle. Next, add one cup of baking soda to the machine. Run the washer on the hottest cycle again. Finally, wipe down the inside of the machine with a damp cloth.
Start with an empty tub. For a front-load washer, put 2 tablespoons of borax or oxygen bleach and 2 tablespoons of washing soda in the tub of the washing machine. For a top-loading machine, put 1/2 cup of each of the powders into the wash tub. Run at the hottest temperature or use the “clean tub” setting on the washer.

For a homemade option, you can try cleaning your washing machine with vinegar. Just pour two cups of distilled vinegar into your detergent drawer. You can also use soda crystals (or baking soda) to clean your washing machine. Sprinkle half a cup into your drum and then let your washing machine run on a hot setting.
Run the machine on the hottest setting: Without adding any clothes to the washing machine, pour in four cups of distilled white vinegar and run the machine on its hottest setting.
Pour 2 cups of vinegar into the detergent dispenser, filling all the sections. Then, select the largest load and hottest water setting and run a complete cycle. Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the washer drum and run a second cycle set to the largest load and hottest water setting.
“For removing odors, I would say vinegar.” Some people, however, prefer white vinegar because it's not as harsh as bleach. Unless, of course, your washing machine has been completely neglected, and is now a breeding ground for bacteria and germs, and you want a power cleaner.
DO clean the washing machine occasionally. Run a tub clean program, use a descaler for removing limescale deposits and clean the washing machine parts such as inlet filter, lint filter and door rubber gasket.
Professionals use a gas-powered pressure washer, a surface cleaner attachment, and a careful selection of specialized nozzle tips, surfactants, bleaches, degreasers, and oxalic acid for pressure washing.
CLEANING THE WASHTUB
Remove any clothing in the wash drum. Open the dispenser. Add liquid chlorine bleach, powder cleaner or tub cleaner. Don't add any laundry detergent or fabric softener when using TUB CLEAN.
White vinegar, also known as distilled vinegar or spirit vinegar, is made by fermenting grain alcohol (ethanol) which then turns into acetic acid. Water is then added to the vinegar, so white vinegar is made of five to ten percent acetic acid and ninety to ninety-five percent water.
Use mild cleaning products: When you do clean your bathtub, use mild, non-abrasive cleaning products to avoid damaging the surface. Baking soda and white vinegar are effective and safe options. Avoid abrasive scrubbing: Avoid using abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the tub's finish.
Run an empty, regular cycle on hot, using two cups of distilled white vinegar instead of detergent. Add the vinegar to the detergent dispenser. (Don't worry about harming your machine, as white vinegar will not damage clothes.) The hot water-vinegar combo removes and prevents bacteria growth.
Running your washing machine empty can be particularly beneficial under certain conditions. For instance, if you're transitioning from washing heavy fabrics, like towels, to lighter items, an empty cycle can help prepare the machine and eliminate any residue.
"Vinegar softens clothes by breaking down excess detergent that makes clothes feel stiff," says Patric Richardson of The Laundry Evangelist. Never mix vinegar with bleach or chlorine bleach, as the combination is highly toxic.
Use a combination of white vinegar and baking soda to naturally clean your washing machine; pour half a cup of baking soda into the drum followed by two cups of vinegar in the detergent dispenser, then run a hot wash cycle. For stubborn grime and odors, consider commercial washing machine cleaners.
White wine vinegar, in particular, is great for dispelling odours. You can either add some to the drum and run an empty cycle or spray it onto a cloth to wipe down the interior and exterior of your machine. Bicarbonate of soda, or baking soda, is also a great household item for cleaning and removing smells.
Add 2 cups of white cleaning vinegar to detergent dispenser. Run the washer through a complete cycle. Run another cycle on the highest level and at the hottest water temperature, this time adding a 1/2 cup of baking soda to the drum. When the cycle is done, wipe inside drum of washer with a damp microfiber cloth.
One of the best ways to clean the washing machine is using chlorine bleach and distilled white vinegar. Starting the washer on its hottest cycle, allow the drum to fill with water, then add one quart of chlorine bleach to the water before allowing the cycle to complete.
With a top-load washing machine, you'll want to start a hot wash cycle and let the water run for a minute before opening up the lid and adding a quart of white vinegar to the drum. Close the lid and let the agitator work for a minute. Open the lid again and let the mixture disinfect the washer tub for an hour.
