How often should I change my Brita Stream® Filter? Replace your Brita Stream® Filter every 40 gallons, or about every 2 months.
For optimum performance, it's important to change your Brita Elite™ filter regularly. Keep your great-tasting filtered water flowing by replacing every 120 gallons or approximately every six months. Users with hard water should replace more frequently.
It actually may be worse for you to drink from a pitcher with an unchanged old Brita filter than from the tap because Brita filters, over time, will grow bacteria.
However, if you use a BRITA branded water filter you can recycle used filters in collection boxes at most Sainsbury's, Robert Dyas and Tesco stores, as well as many other large retailers and independent stores. Some collection boxes will accept any brand of water filter, check in your local area for more information.
Composting. If it's in compressed “carbon block” form, like one of our USC2000 filters, crush it up and mix it into compost or soil - it also works very well in pot plants. The carbon won't just sit in the soil passively but will positively add to it by increasing aeration, and water retention.

However, Brita has a partnership to recycle its products with TerraCycle. Sign up to receive a free shipping label and send old Brita filters to be recycled.
Although filters can be helpful in removing harmful chemicals from our water, they sometimes strip away beneficial minerals too. These include magnesium and calcium, as well as iron and manganese, which are eliminated to make water softer and prevent discolouration, respectively.
If you do not change your water filter after 40 gallons of Brita or every 2 months, bacteria will grow in your filter or get mixed into your water.
The ONLY difference is that the white filter is a Stage 2 and the blue filter is a Stage 3; and the only difference therein is that the Stage 3 (blue) one adds a mineral 'flavor' to the taste of the water, hence the term 'mineral core'. Otherwise, the filters are the same.
Q: Instruction says to dump out first 3 pitchers of filtered water after installing a new filter. That's 30-40 minutes of work.
