Most residential garage door openers started implementing rolling code technology since 1997. For LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Craftsman openers, rolling code technology (known as the Security+ 2.0 system) is available in models with a red, orange, purple, or yellow “learn” (or “smart”) button.

The Learn/Program button on residential garage door openers is used to program various accessories, clear the opener's/operator's memory, set travel and force adjustments, and depending on your model enable Wi-Fi programming.
Learn Button Functionalities
Programming Remote Controls: One of the primary functions of the LEARN button is to program remote controls or keypads to communicate with the garage door opener.
If your system does not have a learn button, it operates using DIP switches and you will need a remote with DIP switches. Older models of garage door openers that use rolling code technology and learn buttons may also vary, so it is wise to check for compatibility before purchasing a universal remote.

If your garage keypad isn't working, check the batteries. It's easy to forget to replace your keypad batteries after a while. A 9-volt or 12-volt battery works for most models. With most garage door systems, you'll have to reprogram your garage keypad after replacing the batteries.
