The other most notable place where roaches are able to enter would be through the bottom of a toilet. Toilets generally seal to the sewage pipe in the floor through a wax ring. The toilet is pressed on to this wax ring which creates a seal.
To deter more cockroaches from entering the toilet, mix a 1 to 2 ratio of dish soap and water, and leave it in your bowl at all times. If the roaches dive in, the soap will suffocate them, solving your problem for you.
Spread of Eggs
The number one reason to not squash a cockroach is to prevent spreading cockroach eggs. Some cockroach species, such as the German cockroach (common species here in the UK) carry their egg cases (ootheca) on their body until just before they hatch.
Leaving the light on doesn't deter cockroaches effectively because they can navigate in low-light conditions. While they're mostly active at night, they may still come out in search of food or water. During the day, cockroaches hide in dark areas not directly exposed to light.
Seeing a cockroach crawl across a bed isn't unusual if the insects are already making a home in your bedroom or a nearby bathroom.
Citrus is one of the scents cockroaches are most known to hate, notably lemon and orange. Keeping a dish of lemon juice on your kitchen counter can deter these pests, as well as placing lemon peels around the home to discourage cockroaches from coming out of hiding.
Clegg's Pest Control does NOT recommend pouring bleach down a drain to kill roaches or any other reason (including monthly cleaning). Most people know that bleach sprays can be used to kill errant roaches that skitter around your floors. Bleach can kill roaches on contact.
Improper sanitation, presence of food and water sources, and favorable living conditions are common causes of roach infestations. Maintaining a clean and hygienic environment, storing food in tightly sealed containers, and promptly cleaning up spills or crumbs can help prevent roach infestations.
If you touch a cockroach, you risk becoming infected with some serious diseases, including bacteria that cause dysentery. According to the World Health Organization, cockroaches commonly transmit these diseases to humans: Salmonellosis.
Citronella Oil
Its strong scent is known to deter roaches and other insects like mosquitoes and gnats. Homeowners can either directly apply the oil to areas frequented by roaches for the most effective application or dilute it with water to create a DIY repellent spray.
Center of gravity: Cockroaches have a high center of gravity and a rounded back, which makes them prone to tipping over. Once a cockroach is upside down, it struggles to gain traction on flat surfaces, making it hard to flip back over.
Roach nest, unlike birds' nests, isn't a physical structure but rather a hidden congregation point for roaches, typically in dark, moist areas close to food and water sources. To find a roach nest, look for signs like droppings that look like coffee grounds, oval-shaped egg casings, and increased night-time activity.
There are a few animals that are known for crawling out of toilets, but the most common ones are snakes, frogs, and rodents. Of these, snakes are by far the most likely to appear. This is because they're good swimmers and often end up in toilets after entering homes through the sewer system.
You don't have to call an exterminator immediately, but take proactive steps to diagnose the scale of the issue: search for possible hiding areas and look for any signs of infestation (roach droppings, eggs, skin casks). Once you see 2 roaches, you have an infestation—contact an exterminator as soon as possible.
Moisture sources
Cockroaches need moisture to stay hydrated and water to drink. They crawl on walls to drink droplets of moisture left behind after a shower and crawl in wet tubs after baths. They may also find moisture in the kitchen, most notably around the sink, under the sink, and perhaps the dishwasher.
Don't try flushing a cockroach into a toilet bowl. You might see them resurfacing again! Cockroaches can hold their breath for 40 minutes, giving them adequate time to crawl up and escape. Your home is still not safe from cockroach infestation even when always kept clean.
Ethanol Directly Kills Cockroaches
While white vinegar won't kill those pesky insects, ethanol—also known as common alcohol—will kill cockroaches. Cockroaches are particularly sensitive to ethanol and a direct hit from it will take them down.
Insects and Arachnids
Strangely enough, one of the most prevalent kind of predator that cockroaches face are fellow insects! The emerald cockroach wasp, Ampulex compressa, for example, has an unusual way of preying upon cockroaches. The wasp stings the cockroach's brain, which paralyzes the cockroach.
Cockroaches are repelled by the smells of peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, citronella, and cedarwood oils. These scents can be used as natural deterrents to keep them away from your home.
While cockroaches are nocturnal creatures and prefer dark environments, keeping lights on alone is not an effective method to keep them away. Cockroaches are more attracted to food, moisture, and shelter.
Surfaces Cockroaches Cannot Climb
There are some surfaces in our homes that are usually too smooth for cockroaches to climb. These include: Porcelain. Glass.
It may surprise you to know that cockroaches are, in fact, able to bite humans. There have been reported cases of cockroaches biting fingernails, eyelashes and calloused skin on hands or feet. Cockroaches will also eat dead skin cells. However, cases of cockroach bites are extremely rare.
