DuPont™ Tyvek® WB is a non-perforated, nonwoven product with microscopic pores that are so small, air and bulk water have a difficult time passing through. But since Tyvek® is breathable, moisture vapor can easily escape from the wall.
Tyvek weather barriers and related products, like sealants and flashing tape, are used to help create physical separation between the interior and exterior of homes and commercial buildings. It can reduce air and water infiltration to help prevent drafts and water damage, but it is also vapor permeable.
For example, House wrap by itself is not an air barrier, it is a vapor barrier. However, IF installed properly, which is rare, with taped seams, bottom, top edges, and no tears, it acts as an air barrier. So primarily it acts as a vapor barrier, but installed properly can do both; vapor barrier and air barrier.
Should there be a vented cavity/airspace on the outside of the Tyvek® wall membrane? Yes, to allow vapour to escape to the outside atmosphere. The cavity/airspace may be vented naturally through cladding/tile joints, or ventilated with airbricks, vents etc.
Weather barriers stop moisture, rain and wind from passing through the building envelope. However, they also allow water infiltrating the wall system to dry out quickly. Properly installed vapor barriers can also act as air and water barriers. They would then be considered a non-permeable air barrier.
Is DuPont™ Tyvek® a vapor barrier? No, DuPont™ Tyvek® is not a vapor barrier. It is made with unique material science to keep air and bulk water out while allowing moisture vapor inside walls to escape.
Quite simply an air barrier reduces the flow of air, a vapor barrier reduces the flow of water vapor and a water resistive barrier reduces the flow of liquid water. Each function is completely different.
First, let's clarify a crucial point: the best practice for housewrap is not to layer it. Multiple layers of housewrap on a project can hinder the building envelope's drying potential, increasing the risk of undesirable moisture-related failures, and hide water damage to sheathing or structure.
What If My Dishwasher Has No Air Gap? Without a dishwasher air gap, contaminated water can flow back into the dishwasher. A dishwasher air gap prevents this from happening by ensuring that the water flows in one direction: out of the dishwasher and into the garbage disposal.
A: Tyvek® is breathable, which means water vapor and gases can go through Tyvek®. The moisture vapor permeability of Tyvek® is much higher than that of plastic films. Compared to most textile fabrics, the air permeability of Tyvek® is low.
Water Vapor Permeability: To limit the possibility of mold and rot, house wraps that offer certain levels of vapor permeability are usually best. Look for products rated at 1 Perm (US rating) or 60 Ng (Canadian rating), as these are benchmark permeability rates for what defines a type II residential vapor barrier.
Tyvek®HomeWrap® exhibited nearly four times the vapor permeability of perforated house wrap, which can only allow vapor to pass through punched holes. The superior vapor permeability of Tyvek® HomeWrap® correlates to decreased wall cavity drying times, and a reduced potential for mold and wood damage.
Tyvek Home Wrap should not be exposed to the elements beyond 2 months, 4 months is the maximum exposure rating.

Fix Tyvek® Housewrap with stainless steel staples or corrosion resistant nails.
There's also the risk of the high loop becoming loose and sagging or poor installation rendering it ineffectual. However, high loops are popular, inexpensive to install and have proven to be reliable backflow prevention methods. If you opt not to install a dishwasher air gap, a high loop is the best alternative.
How Measured: Air gaps shall be measured vertically from the lowest opening of the water supply outlet to either (1) the flood level rim of the fixture or receptor served, or (2) the maximum elevation of the source of contamination.
It creates a separation between the water supply and potentially contaminated water in a sink or other plumbing fixture. The use of an air gap is required by plumbing codes for certain plumbing fixtures, such as dishwashers, to prevent the backflow of potentially contaminated water into the clean water supply.
It is important to maintain the continuity of the DuPont™ Tyvek® WRB from bottom to top with proper shingling. Starting from the bottom of the structure, continue wrapping all the way up, overlapping the previous layer of Tyvek® WRB by a minimum of 6”.
When used over rigid foam insulation, the Building Wrap must be fastene with roofing nails or other large- headed nails long enough to penetrate through the insulation into the framing studs.
Because a vapor barrier is a low permeable barrier, it keeps moisture from passing through. This is beneficial to keep moisture away from a dry surface but will trap moisture behind it if installed on a water-damaged concrete wall, causing the wall to fail further.
Housewrap needs to provide holes big enough to allow vapor to pass, yet small enough to prevent liquid water from penetrating.
Gypsum board drywall is, itself, a suitable air barrier material. The taping of drywall seams results in a plane of airtightness at the field of the wall. However, several steps must be taken to use this material property to create a continuous and complete air barrier system.
