Skeleton keys are different than most keys in one way: the interior bit on them is hollowed. It gives the key the power to open just about any lock in the home, except for keys that weren't built in the house. They're often employed in antique pieces of furniture, like china hutches, jewelry boxes, and trunks.
In this type of system, each lock will still have its own key that corresponds with the wards; the skeleton key, or master key, can open any of the locks within that system. (You may find these locks at hotels, office buildings, schools, or apartment buildings.)
How they are used today. Skeleton keys became less common after the invention of locks that could be opened with a specific key. However, they are still used today for specific purposes. For example, some landlords kept a skeleton key so they could enter tenants' homes in an emergency.

The skeleton keys were common in both cabinetry and door locks in early Colonial America. They stayed in common usage within the United States through the 1940s. After World War II the pin tumbler lock took its place.
In appearance, the Skeleton Key doesn't always take the form of a key, and sometimes manifests as a lockpick instead. In its key form, it can be used to unlock any lock. As a lockpick, it is nigh unbreakable and can get past even the toughest locks.
You can only get the Skeleton Key from Skeleton Chests that have a 1/500 chance of replacing a normal drawer in rooms 1-10. The Skeleton Chest looks like your average chest but with a skull on the front.

Once a Tiny Tina's Wonderlands player has disconnected from the internet, they can accept the Skeleton Key from their Mailbox and then quit to the game's main menu. Fans should then load into the game and go back to the Mailbox, where they will find that the previously-claimed Skeleton Key has returned.
