The standard size hole for a kitchen faucet is 1 3/8 inches (35 mm) in diameter. This is the size of the hole that is typically drilled in the countertop or sink to accommodate the faucet. However, it's important to note that there are different types of faucets, and some may require a larger or smaller hole size.
Sinks generally come in one of three configurations: 6”, 8”, and 6”-16”. The faucet will cover the holes in most of these configurations. You will need to measure the width between the outer holes or estimate it by measuring the width of the deck plate. A 3-hole sink is very common.
There are many types of faucets for bathroom use and not all bathroom sink faucets work with every sink. It's important to make sure the faucet you choose will fit your sink or basin. Standard faucet drillings are centerset, single-hole or widespread.
Measure the countertop behind the sink, and the diameter of the pre-drilled holes and the distance between their centers. The hole dimensions are how to determine what size faucet will fit, before you buy the faucet.
You can install a one-hole faucet in a three- or four-hole sink by adding a deck plate but not vice versa.
Common connector sizes are typically 3/8-inch compression or 1/2-inch threaded fittings. Measure the distance from the shut-off valve to the faucet to determine the appropriate length of supply lines needed. Standard lengths range from 12 inches to 5 feet, but longer options are available if necessary.
Each has a range of available sizes to fit a variety of sinks and installations, but most have a standard width and height that fit most sinks with pre-drilled fixture holes. The exception is wall-mount faucets, which require customized installation.
Faucets are not universal, as they come in a variety of sizes, styles, and designs to fit different sinks, countertops, and bathroom/kitchen configurations. Additionally, faucets use different mounting systems and connections, which may not be compatible with all sinks or countertops.
Choosing the right faucet for your kitchen or bathroom sink is key. Make sure it fits your sink's hole size and layout. Most faucets need a hole diameter of 1-1/2 to 2 inches. Always check your faucet model's specs before buying.
Unfortunately not all bathroom sink faucet are universal. Their hole sizes are close, but vary. And there are many types of bathroom faucets, making it more difficult to choose one.
Most faucets in the United States have a 1/2" MPT (male) or 1/2" FPT (female) threaded inlet. These connections use the NPT (National Pipe Thread) standard.
Faucet Design Details
Color coordinate - Don't forget to consider matching your sink and faucet for a cohesive, monochromatic look. Traditionally that's matching a stainless steel sink with a faucet, but you can incorporate more color into the kitchen with Silgranit.
Kitchen faucets are not universal. There may be limited space between the wall and the sink. There may be a clearance limitation with cabinets above the sink. The layout of the sink, cabinetry, and available counter space all need to be taken into consideration.
We suggest choosing a single-hole faucet if you have a smaller sink so that you can use the extra space to your advantage. Centerset faucets fit three-hole sinks and have either a single lever or two handles mounted on a plate. On the other hand, widespread faucets have three separate pieces: two handles and a spout.
Not all sinks and faucets are compatible. Always get a copy of the manufacturer's specification sheet, complete with diagrams and dimensions for both the sink and faucet and make they are compatible.
Sinks and faucets come in different configurations. The faucet configuration has to line up with the number of holes in the sink. The two components don't necessarily have to match exactly, as extra holes can be hidden with plugs and baseplates.
For the most accurate measurement, remove the faucet and handles from the sink. To get the faucet center, measure from the center of the hole in the sink on the far left to the center of the hole on the far right. Faucet center measurements can be anywhere between 4 and 16 inches.
Use the Specification Sheet, or measure the product for the hole configuration. The product Technical Specification sheet will have the recommended hole size and spacing required for installation. The specification sheet is on the website under the product's image, in the Documents and Specs tab.
If you have windows or cabinets above your sink, measure upward from the center mounting hole to find the maximum overall height and ensure your new faucet can fit comfortably underneath. To find the ideal spout reach, measure from the center mounting hole forward to the center of your sink.
You may need to obtain an adapter in order to connect your new faucet to your pre-existing supply lines or shut-off valves.
Most faucet centers range between 4 and 16 inches, with widespread faucets typically measuring at 6 to 8 inches and centerset faucets measuring at 4 inches. If your sink or vanity has only one pre-drilled faucet hole, then you'll want a single-hole faucet that includes a handle.
