The installation process for baseboards can vary by how you choose to attach them to your walls. The primary methods to attach baseboards are gluing, nailing, or combining the two. Both gluing and nailing can achieve desirable results for baseboard application, but these expectations can vary by the homeowner.
Attaching Baseboards to the Wall
When attaching baseboards, use 8d finish nails, driving them at a slight downward angle near the top and bottom edges of the board. For a cleaner finish, use a nail set to drive the nail heads just below the wood surface.
Putting molding on walls with glue means you won't need any nails and the glue will help keep the molding from warping or pulling away from the wall.
To fasten the trim to the wall, I use 2 1/4-inch-long 15-gauge nails. On the interior of a home, nail holes in PVC can be filled with almost anything used with wood; Bond-and-Fill is a safe choice. To glue joints together, use PVC cement, since wood glues like Titebond II don't work all that well with PVC.
For jobs like molding or baseboard installations, nails are often used for their price and user-friendly applications.
Whether you are installing new baseboards or replacing old ones, you can't go wrong with high-strength adhesives like the ones in Loctite's Power Grab product family. They reduce the need for nails, which makes them perfect for installing baseboards.
Crown molding should be nailed into the studs, but for baseboards it's probably okay to go rogue since you've got gravity on your side and all. If the corner pieces seem like they'll have a teeny gap between them, add a dab of wood glue before you hammer them in.
Gluing Pros and Cons
Poor adhesive application increases the risk of unsecured baseboards. Glue is less forgiving than nailing when removing or repositioning baseboards. The potential damages from the glue can impact the appearance of your baseboards and lower the quality of your home.
Use the hammer to attach the baseboard molding.
Using finishing nails and a hammer, secure the baseboard molding to the wall at the studs.
You should use between a 15- and 18-gauge nail based on your baseboard size. With these, you can locate nails that are 2.5” in length, making them the ideal length for installing baseboards. If you use a brad nail, you should use a 15-gauge nail that is two inches long.
For trim or molding larger than 2 inches in width, run a 1/4 –inch serpentine bead (S-bead) of constructive adhesive about 1 1/2-inches from both edges of the trim. Push the piece into place and hold for 5- 10 seconds. Step 4. Allow the adhesive to dry or cure for at least 2 hours prior to painting.
Pro-tips: Use two nails for baseboards 5 inches or less; anything over consider using three per stud. Don't forget to account for base caps and shoe molding.
Nails are usually preferred for large projects because they can be installed quickly with nail guns and are less expensive than screws. Nails are less likely to split wood and their small flat heads are less visible than screw heads.
While installation of baseboard trim isn't hard, cutting and measuring the angles can be tricky. The process is similar to installing crown moulding. This is a project where "measure twice, cut once" will save you time and effort.
Sometimes, gaps between wood floors and walls can be caused by floor joists that have been affected by dry rot. Cracks in the foundation or improper ventilation systems can cause excess moisture to build up in the crawl space of your home, causing structural beams and floor joists to rot.
You might want to select nails over glue for your baseboard project because nails are more effective at keeping the baseboards secured, straight, and free from warping.
Place the baseboards against the wall and add nails to the bottom and top portion of the baseboard. Each nail should be spaced out about 16 inches. Use a stud finder to find where to start nailing the top portion, then put a nail every 16 inches in either direction from there. Do the same for the bottom of the trim.
Use finish nailers for projects with thick materials and heavy-duty, finishing touches like installing baseboards, building stairs or assembling cabinets. Brad nailers are best for light-duty projects or for delicate materials.
But as many homeowners know, those little pieces of carpentry can become a big obstacle when ripping up carpet, or even installing hardwood floors. Fortunately, removing and reinstalling baseboards are pretty straightforward projects. All you need are a few basic tools, a gentle hand and a little elbow grease.
Often the joinery is sufficient to hold the structure together without any glue or nails, but glue is usually used as well. Pegged mortice and tenon joints do not require glue.
To Install Quarter Round Use Nails Not Caulk
It is not the right choice because it won't create a strong enough bond like glue will. Use caulk only for what it was designed for: to fill gaps if necessary. Installing quarter round without nails is possible by applying a floor adhesive.
Some materials, like hardwood and laminate, expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes, and baseboards typically help conceal these movements. Without baseboards, there's a greater risk that the edges of your flooring may show signs of wear over time.
Brads, finish nails, and pin nails are the most common fasteners for trim work, but screws are useful when strength is a priority. The types of fasteners typically used to install trim include nails, staples, and screws.
