Using Dawn dish soap in a dishwasher is generally not recommended. While it may seem like a quick solution for cleaning dishes, dish soap is designed to create a lot of suds, which can lead to excessive foaming and potentially damage your dishwasher or cause it to overflow.
Pour in a cup or 2 of white vinegar into the dishwasher and that will get rid of the suds in the dishwasher. Then just add hot water if there isn't enough left in the dishwasher (manually by cups) and run a cycle and the unit should get rid of all the suds and finish the cycle.
Rinse Out the Soap: Once the dishwasher is drained, pour a bowl of cool water into the bottom of the machine. Repeat the drain cycle to flush out suds. You may need to do this multiple times. Neutralize Suds with Vinegar: Add a cup of white vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher to help break down any leftover soap.
Open your dishwasher's detergent compartment. Squeeze in two to three drops of regular dish soap, the kind you'd use to hand-wash your dishes normally. Next, pour in baking soda until the compartment is full. Then run your dishwasher on the normal cycle.
Though dish soap is great as a stain pretreatment option, it's not meant for direct use in a laundry washing machine. That's because dish soaps are uniquely formulated to break up grease and stuck-on food particles with foamy suds—something you don't want to happen in your washing machine.

There's no need to change out of your pajamas and head to the store. Chances are you already have all you need to make a good alternative. Just put three drops of liquid dishwashing soap (Dawn, Palmolive, Fairy, that kind of thing) in the soap slot of your dishwasher.
Washing Prohibited Items
Items made of wood, cast iron, or anything with a delicate glaze should stay out of the dishwasher. The high heat and strong detergents can warp, rust, or degrade these materials. By placing such items in the dishwasher, you could be causing irreversible damage both to them and to your machine.
The Environmental Working Group gave Dawn a 'D' grade because of it containing methylisothiazolinone, which is a "High Concern: acute aquatic toxicity; Some Concern: skin irritation/allergies/damage". Sounds delightful, right? Dawn also contains 1 4-dioxane which is considered a groundwater contaminant.
A quick alternative to dishwasher detergent is a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar. Add a cup of baking soda to the detergent compartment and a cup of white vinegar to the rinse aid compartment for an effective, all-natural cleaning solution.
