Rodents, bugs, and accumulated dirt are common culprits. Wind, air currents, and failing ductwork can also generate sounds that go bump in the night.
Scratching Noises: Rats, mice, and cockroaches are most likely to skitter through your ductwork during the nighttime, so you should listen for crawling noises before you go to bed. You may also hear these sounds coming from your attic, as this room is often the source of an infestation.
Dirty/Clogged/Old Filter
A clogged filter can cause a high-pitched whistling, loud thumping, or buzzing sound. It can also cause the AC to cycle on and off more frequently. If the cause is a bad filter, replacing it is simple and should result in quieter air vents.

The strong scent of peppermint is overwhelming to mice. Similarly, essential oils such as eucalyptus oil, bergamot oil, clove oil, and cinnamon oil are potent in keeping mice at bay. One study noted that eucalyptus oil applied once a day was more effective as a rat repellant than once a week.

2: A Scraping, Gnawing Sound
Whether it's rats, mice, possums or squirrels they're going to navigate around the house using the ductwork and you will hear a creepy crawling, scraping sound. Sometimes you will also hear them gnawing through insulation and other materials.
Irregular Noise: When mice run through the ductwork, it creates noises that you should be able to hear, especially during nighttime. You may also hear chewing noises, mild squeaking, and scratches. Foul Odour: When mice urinate, it leaves an odour.
Rodenticides should not be employed as a method of eradication when rodents are in your vents, as the poison will be spread by your air system and is potentially toxic to humans when inhaled. Homeowners should instead locate each vent in their home and remove the grates.
The easiest way to attach mesh to air bricks is to drill holes in the surrounding bricks and use plugs, screws and washers to keep it tight. Covering air bricks with mouse mesh requires the use of a hammer drill. Alternatively, it is sometimes possible to jam the mesh in place in order to mouse mesh grills.
