The patio black spots that grow on your garden stonework are actually spots of black lichen. The spores from the black lichen start life as tiny dust-like spores growing on the underside of leaves on trees and plants. These spores are carried, by the wind and the rain, onto your stonework in their millions.

Lichen but more commonly referred to as Black spot is a common problem that can affect patios and other outdoor stone surfaces. These issues not only look unsightly, but when left untreated they can also damage the surface over time.
Cause. Algae, lichens, liverworts and moss are found in damp places as they need moisture for both growth and reproduction. Lichens are particularly common in areas with clean air. However, they grow only very slowly so, unlike moss and algae, are slow to spread.
Factors influencing the discoloration are calcium chloride mixtures, cement alkalis, hard surfaces, inadequate or insufficient curing, wet subsurface, varying proportions of aqueous cement on the surface, and changes in the concrete mixture. Discoloration from these causes appears very soon after concreting.

Black mold growth on concrete takes on the appearance of black spots, larger circular formations, or complex solid growth over an entire wall. Black mold in small amounts could also be mistaken for common mildew around damp basement areas but is much more dangerous.
Vinegar can be applied directly or in a 1:1 ratio with water. In the case of bicarbonate soda, dissolve 1 to 5 tablespoons in 10 litres of water, depending on the degree of soiling. The mixture must now soak in for 15 to 20 minutes. The patio is then cleaned with a scrubber and finally rinsed with clean water.
Second, bleach isn't suitable for man-made concrete slabs – only natural paving stones. Bleach will fade artificial slabs over time. Lastly, you'll need to wear protective clothing to stop the bleach from getting on your skin.
Combine 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of milk in a glass bowl. Dip cotton pad or Q-tip in the bowl and apply to dark spots. Leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and finish off with your favorite serum and moisturizer.

Use a mild grease-cutting detergent such as Dawn or Ajax dishwashing liquid mixed with water and a natural or synthetic bristle scrub brush to help brighten the patio surface. NOTE: Never use a wire brush as it can leave rust stains and scratch the concrete surface.
Pour your vinegar and water solution over your patio (you may need several buckets) and leave the vinegar to work its way into the paving slabs for 30 minutes to an hour. Once the time is up, follow the soapy water method from step 4 onwards.
Before cleaning, we recommend decluttering and sweeping your patio so it is clear of any debris or dirt. Once your patio is clear, pour the vinegar solution over the areas that need cleaning and leave for 20 minutes. Once the time is up, give it a good scrub with a gardening brush and rinse it away.
