Artist Katie Liddiard explains exactly why she chooses to paint vertically. It has to do with the line of sight to the canvas. If the canvas is tipped the sightline is skewed, which will likely cause the artist to distort the proportions of the painting.
SW: A vertical format gives the painting stature and an elongated grace. By leading our eye upward, it can imply that there's more we're not seeing, and can appear to extend beyond the top (or bottom) edges. A horizontal painting tends to be more framed, more enclosed by its borders, certainly in height.
Most artists naturally draw with a kind of vertical perspective, and most viewers naturally see with it. Without consciously thinking about it, lots of us humans tend to organize a composition with far away objects higher up, and closer objects lower down. This is vertical perspective.
The general theory is horizontal art format may be best suited for landscapes and seascapes. Vertical art format, on the other hand, is generally better for portraits and figurative paintings.

vertical, perpendicular, plumb mean being at right angles to a base line. vertical suggests a line or direction rising straight upward toward a zenith.
If you paint sitting down, you're more likely to pigeonhole into little areas. And that can also ultimately cause distortion within your piece because one area might be too small while in another area might eventually grow to fill in the gaps that the too small area created.
Start painting at the top and cut in around the edges of the wall and your fixtures with a paintbrush. It's easiest to work with small sections of wall at a time, so aim for about three feet each when it's time to load up your roller. Then, paint in a vertical direction using a zig-zag pattern.
There are fewer vertical artworks made, more horizontal artworks are displayed, and the vicious circle continues.
Vertical perspective may mean: A form of perspective (graphical) used in Ancient Egypt, where nearer figures are shown below larger ones. The special case of the General Perspective projection where the camera (in space) directly faces the centre of the Earth.
Artists use color value to create different moods. Dark colors in a composition suggest a lack of light, as in a night or interior scene. Dark colors can often convey a sense of mystery or foreboding. Light colors often describe a light source or light reflected within the composition.
Vertical lines are often associated with strength, stability, and growth. They can evoke a sense of elevation, aspiration, and upward movement. Vertical lines can also suggest formality and authority.
What Causes Brush and Roller Marks? Application of additional paint, or re-brushing or re-rolling, in areas where the paint has partially dried. "Working" paint too much during application (e.g., applying too quickly or for too long). Use of the wrong type or nap size of roller cover.
The easel is the most classic way to work on a painting. An easel is a tripod-like support that holds your painting while you create it. The easel is practical in the sense that you can work seated in front of your canvas. The easel allows you to position your canvas at an angle averaging between 45° and 90°.
Knowing this little trick will make your watercolors so much more vibrant and saturated with the color! Watercolors need water to work and the same goes with your watercolor pans!
From the point of view of your upper back and neck, the best position for painting or drawing is standing at an easel. This means that you are working on a vertical surface and this creates very little strain on your upper back and neck.
Always cut in first then continue painting with a roller. Cut in and paint with a roller one wall at a time. If you cut in all areas first and then roll the entire room, the paint that was applied when cutting in will have dried quicker and you will be left with a patchy, uneven finish.
Direction: Choose the east, north and northeast wall to place the painting.
To “thin” paint, an exterior painter will add water to the paint bucket, increasing the paint's workability and slowing down the speed with which it dries. This is especially helpful in hot climates, including summers in the Sun Belt.
As artists, we all know how critical it is to constantly check progress as the painting matures. There is a hybrid solution (probably more than one) if you aren't interested in standing and that is sitting on a raised stool at the easel. This allows the body center to be a little higher, promoting posture and breath.
Brush marks are caused by strokes that leave the paint with a rough texture and visible brush strokes. The rough texture and visible brush strokes can be easily covered in a second coat of paint by using a slightly different technique than you used for your first coat.
The vertical line test can be used to determine whether a graph represents a function. If we can draw any vertical line that intersects a graph more than once, then the graph does not define a function because a function has only one output value for each input value.
