Schlage was acquired by Ingersoll Rand, a Fortune 150 manufacturer of industrial, mining and construction equipment. As a result of the acquisition, Schlage became part of the Ingersoll Rand Door Hardware Group.

A Little background. Before we dive into the comparison, it's important to understand that Schlage and Kwikset are just brand names and not specific lock models. Both companies, Schlage and Kwikset make many different types of locks, such as residential doorknobs, deadbolts and keypads.
Walter Schlage is a prestigious brand in the international lock industry. It offers a wide range of high-grade locks such as Deadbolts, Knobs, Levers, Handlesets, Electronic Locks, and Smart Locks. All Schlage products have premium metal construction that adds strength and security.
The Schlage Manufacturing Company was founded in 1920 by Walter Reinhold Schlage, a German-born engineer and inventor renowned for creating the bored cylindrical lock. As a young boy, his father recognized his mechanical aptitude and worked to have his son admitted to the Carl Zeiss Optical Works in Jena, Germany.
This deadbolt set is NOT the reliable high quality Schlage to which everyone is accustomed and upon which Schlage has built their reputation. Not only is it made in China, but it is very noticeably lighter in weight than standard deadbolt lock sets.
Bottom line: Schlage is the most secure; as well they should be at twice the price of Defiant. They are even more costly than that because they only come with two keys while Defiant comes with four keys and anybody with a family needs at least four keys.
Basically, you cannot re-key the lock from Schlage to Kwikset, but you can change the lock cylinder from Schlage to Kwikset. A locksmith will be able to do it for you. Changing the lock cylinder will still cost less from changing the lock itself.
Kwikset®, a Black & Decker® company, has been a leader in the lockset industry for 60 years. Kwikset manufactures and markets several full lines of door hardware, including handlesets, knobs, levers, deadbolts, and pocket door accessories, for residential and light commercial markets.
Take Schlage for example. The company manufactures 30,000 different keys. A spokesperson for Schlage says they constantly rotate the thousands of key codes they ship to retailers.
That's because Defiant locks are actually made exclusively for Home Depot by the Taiwanese manufacturer “Taiwan Fu Hsing Ind. Co. Ltd”, and have been for almost 25 years, according to one of the brand's promotional videos.
Baldwin and Kwikset are part of Hardware and Home Improvement (HHI), a major manufacturer and supplier of residential locksets, residential builders' hardware and faucets with a portfolio of renowned brands, including Kwikset®, Weiser®, Baldwin®, National Hardware®, Stanley®, Pfister™ and EZSET®.
Can items from different brands be keyed alike? Schlage, Baldwin Estates, Baldwin Reserve, and Emtek can all be keyed to the same key. Kwikset, Yale, and Baldwin Prestige can all be keyed to the same key.
New Britain, Conn. -based Stanley Black & Decker Corp., which bought Baldwin in 2003, said Baldwin's customer- and consumer-services team, numbering about 35, would remain in the Reading area at a location not yet identified.
