WD-40 Specialist Locks Lubricant
The WD-40 Specialist lubricant has been specially developed for the maintenance of all types of cylinders. With the help of its grease- and silicone-free formula, it penetrates by capillary into all the micro-mechanisms of the locks without clogging them.
Powdered graphite is the traditional material for lubricating pin tumbler locks. You can even buy powdered graphite that comes in a little tube with a thin nozzle specially designed for squirting the graphite powder into the keyway.
The WD-40 specialist cylinder - spray was specially developed for the maintenance of all types of lock cylinders. The silicone and grease free formula and high capillary action allows the product to penetrate the cylinder mechanism and loosen blockages without gumming up.
PTFE is the recommended padlock lubricant. This is a dry synthetic lubricant that can be sprayed on all internal and external padlock components. The advantage of PTFE is that it will not attract dirt. Avoid using petroleum-based lubricants such as WD40 and other oils.
So even though it's very tempting if you have a can of WD-40 handy (and let's face it, most of us have!) to just give your lock a quick squirt, please don't! The same applies with bicycle chains, you can clean them with GT-85, but using WD-40 will attract dirt over time.
For optimal performance, lubricate your lock with Master Lock's PTFE Lock Lubricant 2300D and 2311 which is ideal for use with all locks. Lubricate both the keyway and the shackle. Use also to lubricate internal components of rekeyable locks.
To lubricate the lock Safestyle recommends using graphite powder, the fine particles mean less residue than oils or sprays which can also be sensitive to hot or cold conditions. Put a little amount of graphite powder inside the door lock to ease any friction inside, making sure not to put in too much.
When choosing the best product to lubricate locks, dry lubricants like graphite powder and PTFE lubricants are best. As mentioned above, oil-based products can attract dust and dirt which can damage the delicate internal mechanism of your lock.
Teflon-based dry lubricant is preferred by some locksmiths over other options, like graphite or WD-40. It's ideal because, besides lubricating your lock, it repels water and dust. That means that once you fix a lock with this type of lubricant, you can expect the lock to be in good shape for a long time.
WD-40 silicone vs WD-40
It is silicon based. A lot of people use WD-40 just the basic one. It is a penetrating oil, It is not a lock lubricant. But for sticky locks or or a lock that's jammed up on you WD-40 is is a nice start because it's a penetrating oil but it does not lubricate your lock.
Don't use oil.
Oil might assist the moving parts of the motor in your car, but it is never a good idea to squirt it in a stiff lock. The oil will just combine with any grime already in the mechanism and compound the situation.
Dirt and dust can sometimes find its way into a lock and build up over time. This can clog up the locking mechanism making it difficult to turn. You can apply some graphite spay or silicone based lubricant in the lock, put the key back in and turn it a few times.
WD-40 Specialist® Silicone
Once dried, this formula leaves a clear, non-staining film that doesn't stick or make a mess, so it won't attract dirt. This silicone lubricant spray is great for use on cables, pulleys, guide rails, valves, linkages, hinges, locks and more.
However, one task this hero product can't do is lubricate locks. If you rely on WD-40 to fix squeaky door hinges, it stands to reason that you could also use it to lubricate a sticky lock. But that's not the case. In fact, using WD-40 for this purpose could have a negative effect.
Fortunately, this is often an easy fix. Simply grab a can of WD-40, silicon-based lubricant, graphite spray, or a dry lubricant and spray it into the keyway.
Use powdered graphite, Teflon, or PTFE-based lubricants like WD-40 Dry Lube to clear away any gunk or debris stuck in the lock. Slide your key in and out of the lock to spread the lubricant around the lock.
