When releasing the pre-charged refrigerant into a new mini-split system, you should open the liquid line (the smaller, high-pressure line) first.
Always open the liquid line (the smaller, uninsulated tube) first. Use an Allen wrench to crack this valve slowly. Let the system equalize slightly, then fully open both the liquid and suction lines (the larger, insulated tube).
So, now I must admit that the better way to do it is to open the SUCTION valve first (slowly!). That prevents oil loss out of the compressor into the discharge line and out of the liquid line.
In a mini split line set, one of the lines is always bigger than the other. The reason for this size difference is that the smaller of the two tubes, called the liquid or discharge line, transports the liquid refrigerant to the evaporator, where it draws in heat.

Although your heart has four valves, the valves open and close two at a time. In other words, the atrioventricular valves open and close at the same time. And the semilunar valves open and close at the same time. That's why you hear only two thumps (“lubb-dubb”) per heartbeat, not four.

During extreme heat or cold, you can expect the mini splits to work harder. The compressor runs at higher speeds. This is mainly to overcome larger temperature differences. But at moderate temperatures, the system uses less energy to maintain indoor comfort.
The standard ones start losing their efficiency little by little below 47°F (8°C). And, stops working (with COP below 1), at 5°F or -15°C. However, if you have a cold-climate model, the unit will still function even at -22°F or -30°C.
B. DIY Mini-Split: Self Start-Up
You can get a ballpark idea of what size of mini-split you need by using the square footage of the space you need to heat and cool. To calculate the number of BTUs needed per hour (BTUh), multiply the square footage of each room or zone by anywhere from 12-25.
In the HVAC industry, there is an ongoing debate on this topic. The correct order can vary depending on manufacturer specifications. Always refer to the specific manual for the equipment you are installing, as some manufacturers specify opening the liquid line first while others prefer the suction (vapor) line first.
Two lines (often displayed as −−negative negative−−) on a mini-split indicate a mode conflict on multi-zone systems. It occurs when one indoor unit calls for heat while another calls for cool. The system cannot do both simultaneously. To resolve it, ensure all indoor units are set to the same mode.
A normal R-410A suction line temperature typically ranges between 40°F and 60°F at the compressor inlet, feeling cold to the touch with visible condensation.

Mini-Split Systems Line Sets
Line sets consist of two semi-flexible copper pipes to connect the outdoor air conditioner or heat pump to the indoor air handler. The smaller pipe is called the liquid line. The larger pipe is referred to as the suction line.
Most residential mini-split lines can run between 15 and 50 feet out of the box, with a maximum extension generally capping at 75 to 100 feet depending on the specific model and tonnage. Premium multi-zone systems can sometimes accommodate total line lengths extending up to 230 feet across all indoor units.
When running copper Freon lines for a mini split, it's best to insulate each line separately to prevent condensation and thermal bridging. Using a single Armaflex tube for both lines can cause moisture buildup between them, reducing efficiency and risking corrosion.
To instantly tell if a standard valve is open, check the handle's alignment: if the lever is parallel to the pipe, the valve is open. If it is perpendicular (forming a T-shape across the pipe), the valve is closed.
Most valves follow standard mechanical rules: Counterclockwise to Open and Clockwise to Close ("righty-tighty, lefty-loosey"). The exact direction, however, depends on whether you are using a circular wheel or a lever.
