Front-load washer: Vinegar is usually used as a fabric-softener alternative when it comes to laundry, and for that reason should be put in the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine, Matthew says.
Clean Your Washing Machine
If you have automatic detergent or fabric softener dispensers, place the distilled white vinegar in the dispensers to dissolve any residue buildup that may limit performance.
If you don't have time for a deep clean, a quick tip is to simply pour in some white vinegar through the detergent drawer and put on the hottest wash you can. This will at least start breaking down limescale and sterilising the washer.
Add a half cup of vinegar to your wash during the rinse cycle to brighten clothes. You can use the fabric softener dispenser or just add it manually during the rinse cycle.
"After treating, you can add white vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser in your washing machine," says Cohoon. "Or for a fuller rinse, manually pause your machine right before the final rinse cycle and add a 1/2 cup of diluted white vinegar to the load. Allow it to rinse and spin as usual."
Simply add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser or to a fabric softener ball. The white vinegar will act as a fabric softener AND it will keep your washing machine smelling fresh and clean!
Front Loader Machine: If you have a front loader, or HE machine, you will put the vinegar in the softener dispenser. Add a 1/2- 1 cup. Putting vinegar in the softener dispenser will release the vinegar in the rinse cycle. Wash towels in warm or hot water and do not use detergent.
STEP 3: Mix up a vinegar cleaning solution and pour it into the water cooler reservoir. A vinegar cleaning solution is a natural and safe way to disinfect a water cooler. Mix a vinegar solution from 1 cup of distilled white vinegar and 3 cups of hot water (or any 1:3 ratio) and fill the cooler reservoir.
Karina Toner recommends putting one to two cups of white vinegar directly into the washing machine drum regardless of your washing machine type and running it on a hot cycle. 'This will help to remove any soap, limescale build-up, or odors from your machine,' she says.
To make the solution is simple and easy on the wallet! Pour equal parts of vinegar and Dawn into a spray bottle. Gently shake, then spray liberally onto the surface to be cleaned. I have found the best results is when I use it to clean chrome shower and sink fixtures.
To create an all-purpose cleaner for windows, counters, and kitchen fixtures: Combine 1/4 cup cleaning vinegar and 2 1/2 cups water in a spray bottle. Add 1/2 teaspoon dishwashing liquid. Shake well to mix and label the bottle.
Add two cups of white cleaning vinegar to detergent dispenser. Run the washer through a complete cycle. Run another cycle on the highest level and at the hottest water temperature, this time adding 1/2 a cup of baking soda to the drum. When the cycle is done, wipe inside drum of washer with a damp microfiber cloth.
Or, wash with detergent and add vinegar to your washing machine's rinse cycle. Also, never mix vinegar with bleach. Doing so creates toxic chlorine gas.
Add two cups of white vinegar and let the cycle run. (If you have a front load washer, pour the vinegar into the detergent dispenser.) For an extra-clean washing machine, repeat the cycle with a half-cup of baking soda. You'll also need to hand-wash the top portion of the agitator and basin above the water line.
Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to your rinse cycle. Wash towels on preferred cycle. Remove from washer and tumble dry immediately. Air dry if weather permits - this makes them feel stiffer but gives them a lovely fresh air smell.
Soften towels with vinegar
The expert-recommended way to soften towels that have become scratchy is to use vinegar. 'Throw a cup of white vinegar in your next wash,' advises textiles expert and CEO of New Sega Home, Brian Delp. The towels have likely become stiff and scratchy because of the use of fabric softener.
'One cup per two big towels works well,' she says. Either pour it into the fabric softener dispenser of your machine or straight into the drum. Set your machine to the hottest wash possible and let the vinegar get to work – there's no need to rinse afterward.
White and distilled are types of vinegar. They differ fundamentally in their acetic acid content. White, also known as spirit vinegar, has 5% to 20% acetic acid. This is generally higher as compared to distilled vinegar's 5%-8%.
If you want to add vinegar to your laundry to help clean and deodorize your clothes, pour 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar into your washing machine instead of the detergent you would normally use. You can also pour 1 cup of vinegar into the last rinse cycle to act as a natural fabric softener.
Use a ¼ cup of household bleach e.g. vinegar on 4-5 liters of clean water. Stir carefully and let the solution sit for 15 minutes. Pour it into the water softener and scrub once more with a brush.
