The ideal time to spray for Fusarium Head Blight (scab) in wheat is during early flowering (Feekes growth stage 10.5.1), when about 50% of the main heads in the field are pushing out small yellow anthers.
Once wheat begins flowering, there is about a 5-6 day window to apply a fungicide. You can also spray a bit later and still get some efficacy from these products, but not as much as targeting early flowering.
The spray window begins when most of the wheat heads on the main stems are fully emerged from the boot and continues through the time when yellow anthers form on the heads until 50% of the heads on main stems are in flower.
Fusarium wilt in the garden causes yellowing from the base up, dark streaks in stems, and eventual plant collapse. This fungal disease has no cure, but you can manage it naturally by removing infected plants, rotating crops, improving soil health, and using resistant varieties.
Only apply fungicides if a favorable disease environment is present. Fungicides are not effective for more than a few weeks. Fungicides applied during dry weather may not be effective by the time the critical growth stage for protection arrives.
Can You Put Too Much Fungicide on Your Lawn? Yes, you can use too much fungicide on your lawn. Always refer to the product instructions on the amount of fungicide that should be used, as too much can burn your grass or kill good microbes, negatively affecting the soil quality.
With systemics or penetrants, apply when the conditions will promote slow drying to maximize uptake, such as calm, cloudy days and late-afternoon to dusk.
Prothioconazole is the only commercially available fungicide with proven efficacy. Azoxystrobin, prothioconazole and thiophanate-methyl led to the highest values for reduction of Fusarium wilt and did not cause phytotoxicity in watermelons.
Symptoms and Signs
Initially, symptoms of Fusarium wilt of tomato appear as one-sided wilting of only half of the plant, branch, or leaflet. At first, the plant will appear to recover from the wilt, but as the disease progresses, it will become permanent regardless of temperature or water status.

Fungicide Use for FHB
Fungicides can significantly suppress FHB up to 70%, but not completely control it. There are six fungicides recommended and labeled to suppress FHB: Caramba, Miravis Ace, Proline, Prosaro, Prosaro Pro, and Sphaerex (Table 1).
Wheat – Apply as a preventative spray when at least 75% of the wheat heads on the main stem are fully emerged to when 50% of the heads on the main stem are in flower. Barley - as a preventative spray from when 70% to 100% of the barley main stem heads are fully emerged to 3 days after full head emergence.
You should spray fungicide directly on the leaves for visible foliage issues like powdery mildew or black spot. Apply it to the soil if you are targeting root rots or soil-borne diseases. Always consult the specific product label, as application methods vary.
The most common use of fungicides in wheat is to help protect the crop from later-season leaf diseases like rusts. Perhaps the most important goal in fungicide applications to wheat is to protect the flag leaf. The flag leaf is the primary driver of photosynthesis that supports head and grain development.
There is no effective fungicide or other cure for Fusarium wilt. The pathogen nearly always kills infected hosts. Prevention and exclusion are the only effective management strategies. Avoid this problem by replanting at that site using species from different genera than plants previously infected there by Fusarium.
This study demonstrated a high mortality rate among HSCT recipients with Fusarium infections. The TRANSET study has reported that patients with Fusarium infections have the lowest 1-year survival rate (6.3%) compared with patients with other fungal infections (25.4%–33.6%).
Fusarium fungi can survive as saprophytes or act as pathogens on various crops. The fungi overwinter as spores or mycelium on seed and crop residue. Some Fusarium species can also survive on roots of other crops, including pulses (as in field pea in the photo below) and oilseeds.
Triazole fungicides such as tebuconazole, prothioconazole, metconazole and prochloraz can provide a degree of control. Timing is the most important factor in achieving the optimum result. Go too early or too late and the critical window will be missed.
Our strongest "weapon" against fungal plant diseases are azole fungicides.
Azoxystrobin and propiconazole are both broad-spectrum systemic fungicides, but they belong to different chemical classes and work differently. Azoxystrobin is a strobilurin (Group 11) best used for prevention, whereas propiconazole is a triazole (Group 3) that acts as a strong curative treatment.
Most fungicides are effective against disease for 14 to 21 days. Corn takes approximately 60 days from silking to physiological maturity, depending on the hybrid. Therefore, spraying a fungicide too early could negate any beneficial effect against disease development that occurs during grain fill.
A general rule of thumb often used is that 1 inch (2.5 cm) of rain removes approximately 50% of protectant fungicide residue and over 2 inches (5 cm) of rain will remove most of the residue. However, many newer formulations or with the addition of spreader-stickers, some products may be more resistant to wash-off.
