Cherry tomatoes and bush beans are excellent choices - they would be first on my list. If you like peppers of any kind, you can get tremendous production from a single plant. Green leafy vegetable such as lettuce, spinach etc. are easily grown in small spaces.
Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and mustard will do well in a small garden and provide you with good production over an extended period of time. Another leafy vegetable that would work great is lettuce, especially the loose leaf varieties.
Add more containers:
Growing vegetables in pots adds usable space to an existing garden. I use them to grow lettuces, herbs and anything else I don't have room for in the beds. The key to growing tasty vegetables in containers is nutrient rich soil and regular watering.
When you have space constraints, start growing things on the walls. Use planters and containers with vertical trellises in them. This makes the most use of the vertical space in small homes and apartments. You can use things like wooden or metal stakes, wire panels, or sturdy lattices to brace the plants.
Combine plants with similar needs (lighting, humidity and water needs). Plants share spaces in nature. Get creative - perhaps a plant shelf under a glass topped coffee table? Cabinets - IKEA if you can source!
Plant closely
That loose, rich soil will let you space plants slightly closer than the packs say. More importantly, plant in blocks instead of rows. Raised beds don't waste space on rows since you'll be picking, working, and walking around the perimeter – especially when you keep the bed widths to four feet wide.
Tomatoes. One of the most popular crops in America, tomatoes—specifically cherry tomatoes—are incredibly high yield. "Lots of bang for the buck here," says Renee Pottle, creator of Seed to Pantry. "One cherry tomato plant will produce plenty of tomatoes for a summer full of salads.
Some plants simply take up more space. Artichokes, asparagus, and rhubarb are perennial plants that need to sit in the garden all season. Vining crops, like squash, cucumbers, and melons will need room to spread out or up.
Radishes are one of the fastest vegetables to grow, taking just 3-4 weeks. Seeds can be sown into prepared ground or pots of potting soil. Make sure you sow the seeds very thinly, spacing them about 2.5cm apart.
As a general rule, put tall veggies toward the back of the bed, mid-sized ones in the middle, and smaller plants in the front or as a border. Consider adding pollinator plants to attract beneficial insects that can not only help you get a better harvest, but will also prey on garden pests.
Depending on the variety—early-, mid-, or late-season—and local weather conditions, Tomatoes take 50 to more than 80 days to grow from seedling to harvest.
Growing a garden has the potential to reduce the amount of money spent on groceries. But this “potential” depends on the costs involved in growing the crops, types and amounts of vegetables grown, yields that are derived from the garden, and other factors.
1. Spinach. Spinach is a leafy green vegetable and a great source of calcium, vitamins, iron, and antioxidants. Due to its iron and calcium content, spinach is a great addition to any meat- or dairy-free diet.
Cherry tomatoes are definitely great producers, as are green beans. Many greens such as lettuce, chard, and spinach, are cut and come-again vegetables, which would make them an ideal choice. With limited space you might like to employ square-foot gardening methods, and I highly recommend companion planting.
Pothos, philodendron, and tradescantia are examples of smaller houseplants that are more impressive when allowed to trail.
Succulents and cacti make a great choice for a coffee table, particularly if you are a little short on space or new to plant parenthood, or indeed, all of the above. These green beauties are easy to incorporate on a smaller table thanks to their miniature size.
Rows Vegetable Garden Layout Plan
The other rule of thumb when using this layout plan is to organize your spacing so that your tallest growing vegetables are planted on the north side of your rows. Follow them with medium height vegetables, and then plant your shortest crop on the south side of the rows.
