The Beginning
Milwaukee Tool was founded in 1924 by tool and dies manufacturer A.H. Petersen. At the end of World War I, Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, asked Petersen to produce a portable and light, ¼-inch capacity power drill to replace the large, cumbersome units used on Ford assembly lines.
Milwaukee rose to early prominence as a trader of grain, and the city was the largest shipper of wheat on the planet in the early 1860s. Shipping was joined by processing industries—flour-milling, meat-packing, leather-tanning, and brewing—that turned Wisconsin's agricultural bounty into useful products.

Milwaukee is famous for the Milwaukee Bucks, the Brewers, some of the United States' largest breweries, and several historic and stunning landmarks. Among these include the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Public Market, Mitchell Park Domes, and the Pabst Mansion.
The City of Milwaukee arose from a collection of scattered settlements on a site familiar to the Native American tribes in what is now eastern Wisconsin. Local historians attribute the name to a word derived from the Potawatomi Tribe. The Potawatomis pronounced it Mahn-ah-wauk, meaning council grounds.
Between 1846 and 1854, a wave of German immigrants arrived, bringing with them expert industrial skills, refined culture, liberal politics, and Catholicism. Milwaukee soon became a center of foundry, machinery, and metal-working industries, as well as a center for brewing and grain trading.
Ames (1774) This tool company – which today makes garden hoses, reels and professional hand tools – was started in Massachusetts in 1774 by a blacksmith, Capt. John Ames.
In 1951, Milwaukee produced an unparalleled new tool – the Sawzall® Reciprocating Saw. As the first portable hacksaw incorporating a reciprocating mechanism, it had just three moving parts and was designed to withstand daily abuse and still provide a 3/4” stroke ideal for sawing and roughing out.
Who Owns Milwaukee Tools? Techtronic Industries Co Ltd (TTI) As it turns out, TTI owns Milwaukee Tool and a host of other power tool companies. It also licenses the RIDGID* and RYOBI names for cordless power tools (Emerson owns RIDGID).
