Granite or marble. This is a big NO. “Windex shouldn't be used on granite or marble kitchen tops. Cleaners like Windex can etch or dull the surfaces of natural stone,” says Rick Glickman, president of Dream Kitchens, a design studio in Highland Park, Illinois.
This easy clean comes in a blue bottle: Windex cleans all types of outdoor furniture, including aluminum, resin, plastic, and glass pieces. Just lightly mist the surface, let stand for a few minutes, and wipe clean.
You can use Windex® Ammonia-Free Glass Cleaner on your car's tinted windows, mirrors, glass, chrome, stainless steel, plastic, and vinyl surfaces. For a streak-free shine, clean car windows when the surface is cool and out of direct sunlight whenever possible.
Windex® Wipes are great for touch ups on small surfaces like picture frames, mirrors and glass table tops. However, we don't recommend using Windex® Wipes on wood, cooking utensils, plates, glasses, or upholstery. Can I use Windex® Wipes on my car windows? You can use Windex® Original Wipes on car mirrors.
It's true. Using Windex, which contains ammonia, can cause damage to glass cooktops that manufacturers won't cover.
Shower doors
“In my experience, Windex does not work well on soap scum buildup on a glass shower door,” says Maria Mendoza, branch manager, Housekeeping Associates. “Instead, use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser with Dow Scrubbing Bubbles and/or vinegar to remove buildup.”
While you might imagine that a glass stove top should be cleaned with a glass cleaner (like Windex), these cleaning products are actually not suitable for a cooktop, as they can lead to permanent stains and streaking on the fragile surface. Cleaning with distilled white vinegar is your best bet.
Windex® Foaming Glass Cleaner gives an unbeatable streak-free shine* to mirrors, glass shower doors, the inside of windows, chrome fixtures and more. Because the formula clings to vertical surfaces, you can spray all these bathroom surfaces at once without worrying about drips.
Clean your toilet bowl.
Because of the chemicals in it, Windex can be an effective cleaner, even for extra-dirty (read: gross) surfaces like the inside of your toilet bowl. Try spritzing the inside of your toilet bowl with Windex.
The safest cleaner for a mirror is clean, warm water used with a soft cloth. An approved glass cleaner such as Windex or similar products may be used.
To get the maximum life out of your plexiglass, never, ever use cleaning solution that contains ammonia to clean your plastic. Cleaners such as Windex or 409 will do more harm than good. Use only products specifically recommended for cleaning acrylic such as Novus #1 or Brillianize, and a soft cloth.
Sink and faucets
Clean your stainless steel sink and faucet with soap and water then dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Next, spray the sink and faucet with Windex and wipe dry for super-shiny results.
While ammonia is excellent for removing grease, it's too harsh to use on your wood cabinetry and can damage the finish. You should also avoid spraying your cabinets with glass cleaner because glass cleaner also contains ammonia.
The blue solution that works well on windows does a great job cleaning ovens. A quick wash with Windex will get the appliance's shine back if it isn't overly dirty. If you want to wipe away the ceramic or acrylic surface, spray it down.
Tile cleaner
If you'd like one product that cleans everything in your bathroom, the famous blue bottle of window cleaner might just be it. Windex can also be used to clean tiles and grout, without causing any damage.
As tempting as it may be to use, Windex or any similar type product can be a hazard to use in the vicinity of food products, particularly cutting boards. If you do not have the proper sanitizer available, a certain "secret" common household item will suffice.
If all you're dealing with are those smudgy fingerprints, you can give your stainless steel appliances a quick touch-up using glass cleaner. Brands like Windex will do just fine, here. Once again, spray the solution onto your cleaning rag and apply it to the smudgy areas on your appliances using a circular motion.
Weekly Washing
Once the stovetop is cool, use white vinegar to spray the surface. Next, generously sprinkle baking soda over the vinegar. Place a clean towel, soaked in hot water and wrung out, over the vinegar/baking soda mix. Let this mixture work its magic for 10 to 15 minutes.
Vinegar is a natural, cheap glass stove top cleaner and degreaser that works super well. Just fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and apply it to your glass-top stove. Even better, attach a sprayer right to a standard vinegar bottle — it fits perfectly! Then, use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away grease and stains.
Since granite countertops have a sealant on them to keep them shiny and stain-resistant, you want to avoid using anything too acidic or basic on the granite. Frequent use of vinegar, Windex or bleach will dull the granite and weaken the sealant. Instead, a little soap and water should do the trick.
Never use an abrasive cleaner or scouring pads while cleaning glass shower doors. Those products can scratch the surface. Use distilled white vinegar to clean shower glass before trying heavy-duty products with chemicals.
Windex can safely be used to clean stainless steel appliances. Windex is a household cleaner that comes in several different varieties. While Windex was originally a glass cleaner, there are now a number of different formulations, including three different Windex products for multiple kinds of surfaces.
Windex® Original Wipes make it easy to add a little sparkle to your kitchen. They are a great stainless steel cleaner for your refrigerator or dishwasher door. And don't forget to touch up the little glass surfaces in your kitchen like the oven door, microwave exterior or glass cabinets.
For a wood coated with a hard surface, like wooden furniture, Windex is completely harmless. If it is sprayed on and kept dry, it will leave a water spot, which could be cleaned off. It won't damage your furniture when used as a cleaner.
