Bright White Colors and Natural Light The bright, white paint of the ceiling and walls, paired with the natural lighting, makes this entire room appear much taller than it actually is.

DON'T paint the ceiling a darker colour than the walls unless they are high. It will make the ceiling look heavy and dark, like it's coming down at you. There are creative exceptions to this of course (like in the first image on this post), but I'm giving you general guidelines here.
All you need to do is add some structural members, such as pieces of wood, higher up in the roof. These members will need to be very strong, so you will need an engineer to tell you where to place them and how big they need to be. The second way to raise a ceiling is to have a home that is built with trusses.
To make a room look taller, you'll need two cans of paint, a white (or very light hue), and a dark gray (or another deep tone). Paint the ceiling, the light color, and the walls the dark. This draws the eye toward the light color and, since dark colors recede, makes the room feel taller.
You may need to set up scaffolding for high entry or living room ceilings. And you may need extension ladders. If you do not own these, you should be able to rent them. For corners and edges, use painter's tape to achieve clean lines.
As counterintuitive as it might sound, a black ceiling can open up a small space and create the illusion that the ceilings are higher than they really are.
Beyond aesthetic appeal, crown molding offers several other benefits, such as making smaller rooms appear bigger or taller and potentially adding value to your home.
Go Monochrome
For best effect, the trim, doors, and ceilings should be at least one shade lighter than your wall color. For anyone who wants to know how to make a room look bigger with paint or even an entire home interior, choose monochromatic painting. The single hue gives any space a seamless look.
When 2024 arrives, expect to see ceilings painted in muted colors like soft pink, canary yellow, mint green and baby blue. If your custom home includes smaller bedrooms for younger family members or overnight guests, light colors can make ceilings look higher and give the space a brighter, airier feel.
Paint below dado level in a darker shade than above
The bigger the expanse of a paler color on your walls the better in a low ceilinged room, but using a darker color on the bottom half of a wall – up to the dado rail height, including the skirting board and dado too – can help the ceiling feel taller.
A Look at Lighter Colors
A lighter paint color above eye level can help to visually raise the ceiling.
Opt for a lighter shade for most of the wall space, as it helps create a sense of airiness. But here's the real trick: paint the bottom half of the walls, including the skirting board and dado, in a darker hue. This "colour blocking" technique not only adds depth to your walls but also makes the ceiling appear taller.
To make a ceiling look lower.
High ceilings always sound good. But in reality, they can make a space feel cold and imposing. Black paint will make the ceiling feel lower without sacrificing space.
A flat white is always the best paint finish for ceilings, as the non-reflective finish reduces glare from artificial lights overhead and the clean white helps reflect natural light around the room, making it feel brighter and more open.
Ceilings should almost always be painted in a flat, matte acrylic paint. The reason for this is that: Flat paint will not reflect light or draw attention away from the wall and room furnishings. Ceilings don't receive much wear and tear, so a glossy, durable paint is not necessary.

A general rule of thumb for your baseboards is the 7 percent rule — they should equal 7 percent of the overall height of your room. So, if you have 8-foot ceilings, your baseboards will look best at around 7 inches high.
