Because oil paint cures via oxidation, layering water-based paints or unapproved mediums directly on top will cause adhesion failure, peeling, or cracking.
I have three go to mediums; 1) 5 part solvent, 1 part linseed oil - this is great to do washes for paint retraction for under paintning and I would assume for drips. This also helps the oil dry quickly 2) Galkyd or liquin - these are great for glazing and really helps give me the right richness in my oils.

🌾Linseed Oil is the most popular & already in most oil paint. It dries quickly & is super flexible/strong. It's thin & liquidy but if you want more density you can use stand oil which is a thicker type of linseed. But it can yellow over time in lighter colours like whites or pale blues.
