The odor gets worse with time, as the urine begins emitting mercaptans, which are the same compounds that give skunk spray its characteristic bad smell. Male cats that haven't been neutered have an even more powerful stench, thanks to powerful hormones they eliminate when they pee.
This is caused by a pheromone that is produced in the urine when specific amino acids called felines break down. Once the cat has passed the urine, the amino acids come into contact with the air and then decompose. This creates the pheromone, the scent that is responsible for the foul smell.
Strong smelling urine can be a sign of not enough to drink. Of course you cam make your own but don's spray this in or on the litter tray: Dilute ordinary household vinegar about 10:1, add some citrus oil (just a drop) or some pure lemon juice, spray from a trigger gun in a fine spray.

Ammonia Smell
Ammonia smells like cat pee, and of course can accumulate from pet urine. Another common source of an ammonia smell is from other animals or critters in your home. These animals can become trapped in your attic or walls and can sadly pass away, leaving a decaying ammonia smell.
Although the risks are small, you could become ill if you contract Toxoplasmosis, worms or you're exposed to too much ammonia. More likely, the noise and smell of your cat doing their business in it will either wake you up or keep you awake when you should be sleeping.
