Thyme Oil. Thyme oil is great at getting rid of bed bugs due to its active ingredient, Thymol. Like most essential oils, it has a strong smell, which bed bugs and other unwelcome pests will dislike.
Blood Orange Oil
This essential oil is proven to be one of the most effective solutions when bed bugs are the matter as it can kill the pest successfully.
Citronella essential oil has powerful repellent, anti-parasitic and insecticidal properties. It kills bed bugs and their eggs by acting directly on their exoskeletons, breaking the reproduction cycle of bed bug colonies and stopping infestations.
How it works: Rubbing alcohol can kill bed bugs on contact and may help in killing eggs. Application: Mix equal parts of rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle. Spray directly on bed bugs and their eggs. However, be cautious as alcohol is flammable. Certain essential oils have insecticidal properties.
DEET treated fabric is repellent to bed bugs (Wang et al. 2013). Commercial insect repellents containing DEET for repelling ticks and biting insects are also helpful for preventing bed bugs when applied to outer surface of clothing (Figure 8).
Essential oils. While essential oils like tea tree, lavender, and peppermint are popularly recommended for DIY bed bug treatments due to their strong scents and supposed insect-repellent properties, there is not much scientific evidence to support their effectiveness in eradicating bed bug infestations.
If bed bugs have one weakness, it's that they're intolerant of extremely high or low temperatures. Washing clothes and bedding at the highest possible setting followed by drying for at least 30 minutes at high heat should do the trick. You can also freeze clothing or other objects you suspect of being infested.
Diatomaceous Earth. DE or Diatomaceous Earth made using fossilized algae is found effective in repelling not just bed bugs, but cockroaches, and ants too. Its odor is something that all these pests hate and so you can easily repel them using this powder.
No scientific evidence suggests that VapoRub (Vicks VapoRub) can keep bed bugs away. While some people believe that the strong smell of VapoRub might repel bed bugs, there is no reliable data to support this claim.
Pyrethroids are synthetic chemical insecticides that act like pyrethrins. Both compounds are lethal to bed bugs and can flush bed bugs out of their hiding places and kill them.
Just like mosquitos hate the smell of citronella, bed bugs do too. A citronella-scented candle is recommended to keep bed bugs at bay, as they hate the smell of it burning, but you can also use citronella essential oil more directly on your bed - plus you shouldn't leave a candle burning while you're asleep.
To lure bed bugs out of their hiding spots, you can use a steamer or a hairdryer to heat areas such as mattresses. Neither of these is hot enough to kill the bed bugs, but it can trick them into thinking a human host is near. You can also keep an eye out at night to locate their nests when they are most active.
So, here's the big question: does vinegar kill bed bugs? The short answer is yes, but with a bit of a catch. Vinegar is acidic, and when it comes into direct contact with a bed bug, it can disrupt its exoskeleton and eventually kill it.
Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids: These are among the most common insecticides used against bed bugs. Pyrethrins, derived from chrysanthemum flowers, kill bed bugs on contact, while synthetic pyrethroids provide longer-lasting effects.
Peppermint oil is a great natural repellent for bed bugs. Bed bugs will avoid areas where peppermint oil is applied due to its strong floral scent. You can find peppermint oil at most health food stores.
Encase mattresses and box springs in protective plastic covers. Vacuum frequently, especially in areas near where you sleep. Cut down on clutter in your home, which will eliminate some hiding places for bed bugs. If you live in an apartment or other shared housing, try to close off your unit.
Does peppermint oil repel bed bugs? Peppermint oil can repel and may also kill bed bugs if the oil is sprayed directly on the bugs. In other words, peppermint oil is a natural bed bug contact insecticide, but as time goes by items previously sprayed with peppermint oil do not impact the bed bugs.
Wash and dry all sheets, blankets, and pillow cases at least once or twice a week. Place bed legs in ClimbUp® Interceptors to prevent bed bugs from climbing up bed legs. These can be purchased on the internet. Placing bed legs in plastic containers filled with water with a drop of dish detergent or oil may also work.
Wiping down furniture and other infested items with dryer sheets will not eliminate or repel bed bugs. Sure, you can buy ultrasonic bed bug repellers on Amazon and in brick-and-mortar stores but that doesn't mean you should. In fact, don't. There is zero evidence to suggest these devices will eliminate bed bugs.
Bed bugs are not known to spread pathogens through their bites. Bed bug bites can be itchy and stressful. Do not squish a bed bug as it will release the blood and any pathogens it may be carrying.
Tea tree oil, renowned for its antibacterial properties, is like a natural bug repellent that bed bugs can't stand. Peppermint oil, with its invigorating minty freshness, overwhelms their acute senses. And eucalyptus oil, known for its refreshing aroma, is a formidable deterrent against these tiny intruders.
Some of these effects include: Allergic reactions to their bites, which can be severe. Effects ranging from no reaction to a small bite mark to, in rare cases, anaphylaxis (severe, whole-body reaction). Secondary infections of the skin from the bite reaction, such as impetigo , ecthyma , and lymphangitis .
