There is no single food that will kill rats instantly. But there are a few foods that can become fatal to them when eaten in large quantities. These include chocolate, avocados, and peanuts. When you want to kill a rat, it is best to trap it and then drown or hit it on the head with a heavy object.
Natural Ways to Get Rid of Rats
Eucalyptus or Peppermint oil can repel rats because they hate the smell. Another way to use a rat's sense of smell against them is to plant peppermint and catnip in strategic places. Diatomaceous earth is non-toxic to humans, but it can dry out rats until they die.
Rats cannot tolerate smells such as ammonia, mothballs, peppermint oil, crushed cayenne pepper, and pepper spray due to their intensified sense of smell. Clean and uncluttered homes and yards scare rats due to the lack of food and places to hide, as well.
All you need to do is mix 2 – 2 and a half cups of ammonia, 100 – 200 mL of water and a 2-3 spoonful of detergent in a bowl. Then, put it to places where rats are usually seen. The smell of ammonia is very pungent that it instantly kills rats.
Bait with Rodenticides
Bait stations using rodenticides (rat poison) are effective ways to get rid of rats permanently. To give yourself the best possible chance of catching a rat in the trap, keep the bait small and in the centre of the trap.
Another is to mix between 2 and 2½ cups of ammonia with 100 to 200ml of water and 2 to 3 spoonfuls of detergent. Place this mixture in areas where you commonly see rats entering your home, and you should notice an almost immediate reduction in rodent activity.
Bromadiolone is a rodenticide meant to kill rats and mice. Anticoagulants like bromadiolone work by preventing the blood from clotting. Unlike some other rat poisons, which require multiple days of feeding by an animal, bromadiolone can be lethal from one day's feeding.
Baking soda or boric acid creates a lot of gas inside the rodent's digestive system. The mouse does not have the ability to expel this much amount of gas, so it eventually kills them. Since cocoa powder has a strong, sweet scent, it can be used to mask the scent of the baking soda.
Get rid of rats fast Using Traps
Place traps along the walls, behind furniture, and in areas where you have noticed rat droppings or other signs of activity. Use bait such as peanut butter, cheese, or fruit to lure rats into the traps. Check and replace traps regularly until you have caught all the rats.

Peppermint Oil – The scent of peppermint smells nice in a home, but this pleasant odor is something that rats dislike. According to a study published in Thailand in 2010, rats spent significantly less time hanging around in places where the scent of peppermint lingered.

Firstly, a rat would have to ingest two to three grams of baking soda to die. The rat would also have to consume it in one go, which is unlikely as baking soda is not one of the rat's favorite foods and two to three grams is a lot to eat all at once.
