The main disadvantage of ceramic tiles is that they less durable than porcelain tiles, and even though they have a similar lifespan when properly cared for, their comparative weakness makes them less suitable for high foot traffic areas. Ceramic tiles are also prone to cracking in very cold weather.
Harder Surface
Like we mentioned before, ceramic flooring is extremely hard. While this makes it easier to clean and maintain, it can also make it uncomfortable to stand on. This material, unlike resilient floors, can't be softened using padded underlayments, which means it might not be a suitable choice for some.
However, their weakness has always been their brittleness. They break easily under stress. But now, researchers have found a solution that could make ceramics harder to break. They published their work recently in Science Advances.
Harsh chemicals can be very damaging to ceramic tiles. They can strip away the sealant, causing the tile to become stained or discolored. They can also eat away at the grout, causing it to crack or crumble. Some examples of harsh chemicals that you should avoid using on tile are chlorine bleach and ammonia.
Ceramic tiles are also often reinforced with another material on the back (which also allows for easy adhesion) and of course they are covered largely by the wall which lends them extra support! Despite the relatively brittle material then, ceramic tiles aren't quite as prone to breaking as your crockery.
Ceramic tiles are one of the most commonly used materials for tile flooring. When properly installed and maintained, ceramic tile can last anywhere from 20 to 50 years or more. It's a durable option that resists wear and tear, though it's not as hard or resilient as some other types of tile.
Over time, the movement of soluble salts will cause the decorative surface or the body of the ceramic to crack or crumble. Archaeological or buried ceramics are particularly susceptible to this type of damage, as they absorb soluble salts from the soil in which they are buried.
Don't use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners on your ceramic tiles either. These ingredients are just too strong and they will cause damage. It isn't just the cleaning solutions you use that can be harmful. Avoid using any hard or abrasive cleaning tools.
Regular and efficient cleaning is the key to keeping your ceramic tiles free of stains and mold. Simply wiping down your ceramics often with hot water can be enough, but for tough stains, try purpose-built cleaning liquids or use ceramic tiles that have built-in antimicrobial protection.
Any chips incurred will naturally expose the plain body underneath, making it very obvious and tarnishing the design. Worse still, ceramic tiles can chip very easily, which can be problematic when an inevitable dropped mug occurs.
Ceramics are typically hard and brittle. While their strength in compression is very high, they are not suitable for loading in tension. Their brittle qualities mean that they fracture very easily. In compression, a crack is not easily propagated, but in tension the crack is free to grow.
The weakest grade of ceramic material is grade 1, which is typically non-oriented. Grades 5 and 8 are oriented ceramic material. When making magnetic assemblies with ceramic, it is typically easier to magnetize the product after assembly.
Fragility is the major disadvantage of ceramic materials with very high requirements for transportation and installation. Ceramic works can be easily broken when being collided by hard objects.
Tile made from ceramic or porcelain is the most scratch-resistant flooring. Ceramic tile is made of fired clay, and it's a hard and durable substance.
For high-traffic or outdoor areas, porcelain will usually be the better choice because of its durability and moisture resistance. For areas with lighter foot traffic or projects where budget is a concern, ceramic tiles offer a cost-effective and attractive option.

They can tolerate heat, making them perfect for kitchen table tops as well as other high-heat locations in your household. Having said that, if you do not really treat the tiles properly, they can be ruined. For example, placing a hot pot directly off the heat might cause harm.
Inspect your subfloor and correct any dips, cracks or uneven places that will cause your tile to buckle or not install properly. If you have a plywood or OSB subfloor, install a water-resistant cement backer board as your underlayment. Concrete subfloors typically don't require backer board.
For the most part, ceramic coatings last between two and five years. In some cases, they can last up to a decade, but this is pretty rare. However, there are many factors that affect their lifespan and might force you to replace yours sooner than you'd expect.
But, in ceramics, due to the combined ionic and covalent bonding mechanism, the particles cannot shift easily. The ceramic breaks when too much force is applied, and the work done in breaking the bonds creates new surfaces upon cracking.
While porcelain tiles may have a higher upfront cost, their durability and longevity can provide better long-term value. Porcelain tiles can last 75–100 years with proper maintenance, while ceramic tiles may need replacement sooner, especially in high-traffic areas of your home.
