A standard bathroom cabinet overhang is about 1 to 1 1/2-inches. This slight overhang is attractive and helps protect the cabinets below the counters from spills. However, some homeowners desire a larger or smaller overhang due to the benefits each can offer.
1. Purpose. If the counter is to be used for food prep, the standard measurement for the overhang is 1-1/2 inches. This is long enough to provide some protection for your cabinets without forming an obstruction.

A typical overhang for a comfortable seating area should be around 25-30cm (10-12”), this should leave enough knee room and adequate space between the countertop edge and the person seated. Therefore, as the depth of the overhang increases, so does the comfort and usability of the bar.
How long should an island be for four stools? At minimum, you'll want an island to be 96″ long to accommodate four stools. For comfort, you should allow at least 24″ of space per stool, and up to 30″.
Different countertop materials have different requirements. Solid Surface countertops can overhang 6 inches without additional support (e.g. plywood decking). 3 cm Quartz (engineered stone) can handle a 14 inch overhangs and 3 cm Granite overhangs should not exceed a 10 inch overhang without additional support.
This determines the appropriate amount of overhang needed. That is to say, don't neglect the top width. Overhangs should not exceed one-third of the top without additional support and will need support at the base. Of course, the best way to support any countertop overhang is with our heavy-duty countertop brackets.
Standard countertop overhang measurements
The standard quartz countertop overhang is 1 ½ inch. If using inset cabinetry, your quartz countertop overhang limit needs to be less than that of frameless or overlay cabinets.
Usually, the conventional overhang of a countertop should be placed at 1 to 1 ½ inches above the cabinet. At the same time, the bared and exposed ends of a countertop should usually have a ½ inch overhang. The edges that suffice to a wall should not have any overhang to retain the fit flush to the wall.
Since countertops sit directly on the cabinets, the cabinetry must be installed prior to the final measurements, fabrication, and installation. If an apron or farmhouse sink is being used, it must be installed prior to template process.
Standard countertop depths range from 24 to 25.5 inches from wall to edge, or edge-to-edge across the island. Most countertop boxes measure 24 inches in depth, with an inch and a half overhang for the countertop, making the overall depth of the countertop 25.5 inches.
That distance, the “overhang” of the counter, is the dimension you will want to specify as a design consideration. Our customers often ask us for a recommended dimension for the counter overhang. The short answer is 1”-2”, based on your design preference.
Kitchen workspaces, which may include both perimeter counters and kitchen islands, should be spaced apart at the following distance: In a single-cook kitchen, at least 42 inches is required. In a kitchen where multiple cooks may be employed, the minimum working space is 48 inches.
The maximum allowable overhang is no more than 1/3 of the depth of the countertop and not to exceed 15” total. 2. Overhangs greater than 15” require the installation of corbels.
Quartz countertops are heavy, and not all cabinetry is strong enough to hold it. In addition, you may have unsupported areas, such as desks or overhangs that may need some support. If your cabinets cannot hold the weight of the quartz, plywood or backer board may be used beneath the countertop to help.
A counter can be well supported by extending the side gables of an island. Ideally make the gable 2″ to 4″ thick so that it proportionality works with your size of your island. This form of support is great for adding strength to the corner of the counter overhang.
1- How much overhang do you have
Most granite fabricators will recommend support brackets on overhangs over 12″ however, solely based on the overhang amount. Final determination on bracket requirements and spacing should be recommended by your fabricator based on the following factors.
The bar top overhang should be a minimum of 8-1/2” and could be as much as 10” so your knees do not hit the bar front. For our extra tall customers the 10” overhang maybe necessary.
If your island has seating, the counter should overhang at least 15 inches. An island with a taller height for bar stool seating should be 42 inches high and the overhang should be at least 12 inches.
You'll want to leave enough room between each bar stool so you can sit comfortably without feeling crowded and get up with ease. A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 6 inches between each stool. If your stools swivel or have arms, you should allow at least 8 or 10 inches between them.
Most tables, counters, and bar tops have a standard height range, but before you purchase stools, the first thing you need to do is measure the height of your surface to be sure. We recommend keeping around nine to 13 inches between the seat and the underside of your surface to give you enough leg room.
Heights of counter stools are generally 24″-26″ inches from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 36″-39″ in height. Heights of bar stools are generally 28″-30″ from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 40″-42″ in height.
'You should plan on 20 to 24 inches (50 to 60cm) for each person along an island,' says Jeremy Boulanger. 'So a 4 foot (1.2m) island would sit two people comfortably, etc. ' Bear in mind that if kids will generally be seated at the island, a width at the smaller end of the range should be just fine.
