It's generally not recommended to whitewash bricks inside the fireplace. The more water you add to white paint, the lighter your whitewash will appear. A one-to-one ratio of paint to water is a good place to start. For a more opaque look, try a two-to-one ratio of paint to water.
Whitewashing Unpainted Brick
By thinning down white or gray paint with water (at either a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio), you allow the color and texture of the brick to show through. Generally, all of the brick, including the mortar, is covered. However, for more contrast, you can paint each brick and leave the mortar uncoated.
Mix Whitewash
We recommend a water and paint mixture. It's super easy to mix and apply, and it's budget-friendly. Mix white, latex paint with water in a 1:1 ratio, which will give you a nice, transparent look. Test on a scrap piece of wood or an inconspicuous area, then adjust the ratio to your liking.
Mix a small container of watery white paint that is approximately 2 1/2 parts water to 1 part paint. A little goes a long way so start small, you can always mix more if needed. I also make a second slightly thicker mix (1 1/2 to 1) and work out of both containers.
The best way to make white mortar is to use white cement and white sand. The proper ratio to use will again depend on what exactly you're using the mortar for, but if you're laying a patio, a good ratio is 4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement.

Mix one part of white paint with two parts of water in a suitable container. Gradually stir in the whiting until you achieve the desired consistency, typically around 3-4 tablespoons per gallon of liquid. Add one teaspoon of salt per gallon of liquid for extra weathering effects.
You can create your own whitewash by diluting white latex paint with water. Or, for a lighter lift, you can go with a premixed option, such as the option from Krylon made for indoor use on brick, wood, concrete, and stone.

To prime or not to prime! Well, in my experience priming depends on how you want your whitewash finish to look. If you want your furniture to look rustic or have that farmhouse feel, you really don't have to add a primer. Now, if you want a more solid and saturated color, then you should consider priming it.
