Regarding cooling only systems, the filter-drier should be installed near the indoor coil. This will be the best way to ensure there is no residue getting into the metering device.
The drier may be installed in any position – vertical or horizontal – and with feed in either direction. Where possible, the horizontal position is preferred. Some type of pipe strap support is recom- mended so the weight of the drier does not cause undue strain on the refrigerant line.
The refrigerant flow direction, indicated by an arrow on the filter drier shells' tags, should be complied with. Assembly can be performed in any position, but not vertically with the outlet connection oriented downwards.
The receiver drier is a component that protects all the other parts of the A/C loop. It is located between the condenser outlet and the expansion valve inlet, on the high-pressure side of the car A/C loop.
Receiver driers are located on the high side of an A/C system.
Suction Line Filter-Driers and Suction Filters should be installed as close to the compressor as possible. If a suction vibration eliminator is used, the drier or filter should be installed upstream of it.
If installed backwards, the filter drier will become useless. Take care not to overheat the newly installed filter drier when using a torch for brazing a sweat-type drier to the liquid line. The brazed connections must be thoroughly cleaned and fluxed when called for.
If a suction line filter drier is also to be installed, in- stall suction line drier downstream of suction line ser- vice valve at condensing unit. Failure to follow this caution may result in equipment damage or improper operation. Never install suction--line filter drier in the liquid--line of a PuronR system.
The sight glasses should be installed directly after the filter drier, ensuring that the filter drier is functioning properly. Refrigerant flows normally through the sight glass, which contains a small, glass-covered chamber.
Your AC system needs a filter drier to prevent refrigerant from freezing inside of it.
The filter drier can be installed in horizontal position or vertical position. For best performance, the suction line filter drier installation as close as possible to the compressor inlet. Glen refrigeration suggest to install a suitable bracket to support the filter drier.
When installed in these locations, the flow through each drier is always in the same direction, see Figure 2. Standard filter-driers will not tolerate flow in the reverse direction. Reverse flow washes out the dirt previously collected, and also tends to result in high pressure drop.
The only permanent suction line on a heat pump is located in the outdoor unit. The permanent suction line is connected to the evaporator coil, which is also located in the outdoor unit.
In a refrigeration system, the ideal location for the filter drier is just before the expansion device, within the liquid line.
The colder the desiccant, the more moisture it can hold. Therefore, locating a filter-drier in a cooler location is an advantage. Removing a brazed filter-drier with a torch flame causes moisture to be driven out of the desiccant and into the system.
If the suction line drier is left in long enough, it may become fully saturated if there's a lot of moisture present. Then the drier begins to disintegrate, resulting in abrasive materials running through a system. Big mess. Don't let it happen.
When the piping arrangement results in excessive stress on refrigerant line, the filter drier should be supported by a suitable bracket. Install with arrow pointing in direction of flow (toward compressor). Reverse flow may cause internal damage.
The most common problem you will face with a backwards facing filter is simple inefficiency. If your furnace is forced to blow air through the non-porous end of a filter, it will take more energy to do so. The blower will be overworked and you will pay more money for your heating.
If the filter drier is partially clogged, there may be a few degree temp drop across it. However, if the filter drier is completely clogged, there will be a large temperature drop across it and likely frost due to the low temp of the refrigerant exiting the clogged filter drier.
If still someone makes a mistake of fitting the drier in wrong direction, the same will not serve the purpose for which it was installed - Filtration and Moisture removal. In addition it will cause pressure drop and the drier has to be replaced.
Receiver/driers are located in the high-pressure section of the system, usually in the plumbing between the condenser outlet and the expansion valve inlet, although some may be connected directly to the condenser.
